Offord crossing closure consultation was created by Burbidge
Saw in the local paper that Network Rail are consulting about permanently closing the Offord level crossing. Followed the link online (www.networkrail.co.uk/ecmllevelcrossings) but no info yet available, although their advert in the paper said it would be. I don't know if they mean to close it and replace it with a bridge, or just close it. Anyone heard any more?

I believe our new District Councillor, Terry Hayward, has more information about this and I'll see if I can get some information to post, or better still ask if he can write a post himself in the next week or so.

Although there are no definite proposals yet I understand that Network Rail intends to close all of the level crossings between Kings Cross and Doncaster. The work is currently scheduled to begin in 2016 and to be completed by the end of 2020. There are ten in the Huntingdonshire area, 4 roads, 5 Footpaths and one private farm road. Two of these, the level crossing between us and The Offords and the FP about 300 yards to the south will effect us. The intention is, I understand, to replace the current crossing with a bridge and new road to the north of the existing one. I have arranged for representatives of Network Rail and their contractor to visit the next meeting of Buckden Parish Council. Rest assured that nothing will happen without full consultation with the councils and councillors involved. If you would like to discuss the matter please contact on either This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 07884 268175.

Thank you Terry.
Buckden Parish Council meets at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month except August, so the next meeting is on July 8th at 7:30. If you are interested in or concerned about the proposed closure of the level crossing, why not come along to the meeting and get the latest information from the horse's mouth?

From their website: www.networkrail.co.uk/transparency/level-crossings/ (there is also a document 'Cambridgeshire PreApplication Approach to Community Consultation.pdf' which you can download. Please see attached the letter we at The Shoe sent to our Parish Council. We encourage all businesses and services to do something similar. Network Rail have already closed around 700 crossings in the UK over the last couple of years, most of them with no replacement or alternative. Lets make sure they cannot do that to Buckden & The Offords!

A representative of the consultants studying the planned closure of the Offord level crossing visited the Buckden parish Council meeting on Tuesday 8th July to explain the process.

The plan is to replace both the road level crossing and the footpath crossing with bridges. The road level crossing will be away from the current location as there is insufficient room to fit a bridge in at that point. The solution will start east of the current river crossing by the mill, and so the road there will remain. The proposed design will be on display and open for public consultation at Offord Village Hall on Saturday 19th July from 11am to 3pm, and on Thursday 24th July from 4pm to 8pm.

The process is that this round of initial public consultation will run until the end of August. After that, a more detailed design will be prepared and a second round of public consultation will take place in the winter of 2014. A final design will then be prepared and it is likely that the entire scheme, which covers the closure of all the level crossings between Kings Cross and Doncaster will go to a Public Enquiry. The findings of the Public Enquiry will inform the legal Transport and Works Act Order to proceed with the scheme which will be made by the Secretary of State for Transport.

The consultants are very aware of the concerns in Buckden and the Offords about severing the communities. They are also aware that there is concern that any solution should not encourage substantially more traffic or larger vehicles than at present.
