Things are developing very quickly, so it is likely that more changes to our daily lives will be in place by the time you read this. It seems certain that the epidemic will be a major event, a health crisis of a kind not seen in the UK for many years. While most people will recover from the illness, it seems that the elderly and those with certain underlying health condi- tions are more at risk of serious illness. Buckden has a disproportionately large population of retired and elderly people. Although, as I write, there have been very few cases in the whole of Cambridgeshire, it seems certain that the virus will visit our community at some stage in the next few months and we have more people at risk than the average across the country. I hope and I think that we can pull together as a community and look after one another where needed. In particular we should all look out for our neigh- bours, particularly those most at risk. However, we have much more for you in this edition. Check out page 13 for the story Tom Swepstone, Buckden born and bred, who was well known around the village for nearly centu- ry. (Tom was also a Roundabout deliverer up until just a year or so before he passed away.) The 1st Buckden and Southoe Scout Group introduce them- selves on page 12, and talk about their scouting and fundrais- ing activities. They are looking for help in running the group— do check it out.
