Buckden Neighbourhood Watch KEEPING SAFE There is no need to be embarrassed about refusing to let call- ers into your home and it is always sensible to take precau- tions. Fit a chain and use it every time you answer the door. Do not remove it until you are sure that the caller is genuine. Take your time when answering the door, think what you will do if it is an unwanted caller. Be particularly cautious of unex- pected callers who appear at dusk or in the evening. Be wary of cowboy builders or roofers who say that your house is in need of repair. Most reputable builders do not cold - call clients, and there are local builders who can be trusted to carry building repairs. Do not be tempted to leave the house to inspect an ‘ urgent repair ’ needed to the roof or guttering. When answering the front door, always ensure that the back door is locked. A favourite trick of a distraction burglar is to claim to repre- sent the water, gas, electricity or the local council, and they may look the part and even have an ID card. Keep the door on the chain, and ask the caller to quote your name and account number. This information is on the worksheet giving details of the reason the caller is at the house. Some utility companies operate a password scheme, if you are uncertain about callers, telephone the organisation. If you are hard of hearing ask the caller to write down the details of who they are. Beware of all callers - many are well dressed and use persua- sive language to impress you. Although not all callers are rogues, there have been incidents where older or isolated people have been the victim of a doorstep crime or unscrupu- lous practice of one sort or another. Other scams involve demanding an exorbitant price for house repairs or garden maintenance and having to pay cash in full before the job is finished. Buckden Methodist Church Minister: Rev.
