Village Hall, Burberry Road, Buckden Tel: 0345 045 5225 www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/library Greetings from the Luck ’ s Lane Estate As the newest residents to Buckden, the ‘ Longhall Legends ’ wanted to take an opportunity to say hello to all of our neigh- bours. Lots of villagers have taken the time to come and visit, at least when the weather was a little warmer, to say hello and to take a look at how the new development was shaping up. We feel Bloor Homes have created an attractive southern aspect that will incorporate a mixture of high - quality houses, large open green spaces with lots of trees being planted and new street lighting. Longhall Road is the first part of the construction released for sale. We have all been challenged by the affects of the pan- demic during 2020 and as you ’ d expect everything ground to a halt when the restrictions came into effect in March. As some semblance of a new normality returned, one by one the homes have been occupied. Amongst us we now count teach- ers, NHS workers, Health and Safety managers, emergency services, international bankers, retirees and other profession- als amongst our street - mates. Lots of effort was made to add cheerful colour and light to homes in the lead up to Christmas and some of us have deco- rated with bunting, in - keeping with the village spirit to look forward to a time when we can indeed celebrate together. We very much appreciate the warmth from local people and businesses; we know the local hostelries, butchers, shops and village club have been well supported already and have been extremely welcoming. So, what about the new road names? The History of Buckden by Susan B. Edgington presents some fascinating detail into early settlement and the occupation during Romano - British, Anglo - Saxon and medieval time. Most definitely worth a read for anyone who has not yet found it here: https://www.buckdenroundabout.info/ Buckden_A_Huntingdonshire_Village/118/index.html A survey of the land by Cotswold Archaeology provided a re- port in 2017 which has shown that the ‘… site is generally characterised by agricultural activity of possible prehistoric, Roman and medieval/post - medieval date largely dispersed across the central and northern part of the site along with evidence for post - medieval quarrying across the eastern and south - east part of the site. There is evidence for Anglo - Saxon activity and occupation of a rural nature …’ Whilst it didn ’ t seemingly uncover finds on the scale of Sutton Hoo, it does give a glimpse to the richness of the land from both river and woodland. You can read the whole report here: https://legacy - reports.cotswoldarchaeology.co.uk/content/ uploads/2018/01/Lucks - Lane - Evaluation - 660876 - 2017.05.09issue.pdf According to Elise Augier, Senior Sales Advisor with Bloor Homes, the new street names were agreed with the Parish Council and are based upon those findings of the archaelogy found on the site. The first street – Longhall Road – refer- ences an Anglo - Saxon building. Following the mixed heritage of the site and the surrounding area, the other new roads will be: Angles Drive; Jute Crescent; Mercia Close; Saxon Way; and Viking Way. We wish everyone of Buckden and surrounding areas a hap- py, safe and healthy New Year. – Andy Peckham
