For a few weeks now the Life Drawing Group has been delight- ed to be back to our weekly meetings at the Village Hall. Our drawing skills may be rusty but it ’ s good to be enjoying the concentration again. It ’ s not just how to draw, but what equip- ment to take, after two years, it takes some remembering. Over the lockdown period some models have drifted away but other drawing groups in the area (Cambridge, Bedford) have also started up and our models tend to work across East An- glia, sometimes London. We seem to be finding enough new models to keep us busy. Drawing human anatomy is probably the best basic discipline for artists, and from the 18th cent. until the 1970s it was the fundamental skill taught in our art schools. Astonishingly, it now seems possible to go through art educa- tion without much rigorous drawing. Most visual arts special- isms (fine art, fashion & costume design, illustration, furniture & interior design, even architecture) are all enhanced by an understanding of human shape and form. For our group, just the concentration of drawing gives a visual challenge that is both fascinating and absorbing, and helps all our other types of painting and drawing. There is an etiquette of the drawing sessions ~ no talking while working, and we only share showing our work if members want to. However, we have had two successful exhibitions at St Neots museum which have been a good time to look at our drawings in frames and away from the studio space. Hopefully another exhibition can be held in future. We are always pleased to welcome new members and there is a coffee break in each session where we chat and share news, often about galleries and exhibitions and general art ideas. It ’ s a joy to be able to be drawing again.
