In July we had our first face to face meeting of the Committee since the start of lock - down, and we have been meeting monthly at The Towers since then. There has been much to discuss. Of course Covid has meant that all of our public activities have had to be cancelled during lock - down, but we got going again after July with a loud bang. Our annual “ Open Day ”, usually held on Heritage Day in September, was combined this year with an “ Artisan Producers Mar- ket ”, organised by Alison Fedorowicz of Saragusta Spirits Co., along- side tours of the buildings, grounds and gardens, and other activities provided by FoBT. We were very lucky with the weather, and the day was a huge success. We plan to repeat this. Tours of the grounds and buildings got going again in July, and there has been much pent - up demand for our excellent and hard - working guides to satisfy. In spite of Covid, 2021 has been a record year for revenue from guided tours. Well done to all the guides. The wonderful volunteer gardeners, who take such pride and care in looking after the Knot Garden, kept going all through lock - down and the garden has remained in great condition throughout the emergen- cy. If you haven ’ t seen it lately, do take a visit. It is in truly great shape. The restoration of the Outer Gatehouse of Buckden Towers was com- pleted in March of this year, and FoBT made a positive contribution to this by funding approximately 20% of the total cost, inclusive of pro- fessional fees. The structure is now safe and stable and should remain so for many generations to come. We take pride in being able to con- tribute to these important works, made possible only through our members and the public support of our fund - raising events. On the cards is the construction of a paved footpath through the Knot Garden from the gate to the terrace. This is to improve accessibility for visitors in wheelchairs. The concept and details have received approval from the Conservation Office at HDC and we are now pre- paring a contract for execution next spring. There will be some disrup- tion to access to the garden during the few weeks that the work will take place, with the contractor having exclusive use of the gate. But access will remain possible through the refectory and on to the ter- race. The contractor ’ s working area will of course not be accessible to the public. We are sorry for any inconvenience. We are looking forward to getting back into the swing next year with our usual activities of Quiz Nights and our famous Plant Sale Day. We thank you all for your support to these activities, the revenue from which goes entirely towards the support of the care and maintenance of the historic buildings and grounds of Buckden Towers. So we look forward to a busy and productive future, but it is with a sense of true sadness on the loss of Anne Nicol, who passed away in November. Anne served on the Council of Management of The Friends of Buckden Towers for many years and was Chair of the Coun- cil between 2001 and 2008. Anne was also a long serving tour guide and was instrumental in setting up the successful Annual Plant Sale Day. Anne was also closely involved in the creation and maintenance of the Knot Garden. She will be remembered with love and affection by all who knew her.
