July 2020
19 Buckden Roundabout July 2020 Village News July 2020 At the time of writing, all library buildings are still closed but as the Government implements their plans to re - open many public spaces, please do keep an eye on Cambridgeshire County Council ’ s website about libraries. In the meantime … NEWS …… Nothing can stop the Summer Reading Chal- lenge! This year the annual Summer Reading Challenge will take place on line – with the help of the Silly Squad! Children and their parents can go to www.sillysquad.org.uk t o sign up, meet the Silly Squad characters, and find out how to unlock badges and complete the challenge. This year it feels even more important to keep our kids read- ing and enjoying where their books take them. Don ’ t forget there is a wide selection of children ’ s books available through RBdigital using your normal library card and PIN, so there ’ s no need to buy all the titles your child might like to read – you can download them for free! Library @ Home Please take a look at the separate column on page 13 about our reinstated book delivery service for those more vulnera- ble readers who need the support of books and audiobooks whilst they are isolating. Overdue charges, return dates and reservations Please do not worry if you have library books at home right now. Return dates have all been extended and fines suspend- ed throughout the closure period. We are not currently ac- cepting reservations for stock whilst we are closed, but any existing reservations will be waiting for you when we re - open. The library on - line Don ’ t forget you can still use our on - line services. This in- cludes eBooks, eMagazines, eNewspapers, three different suppliers of eAudiobooks and e - comics too! To find out more go to: https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/libraries - leisure - culture/libraries/library - online All you need to register for each is access to the internet, your library card and PIN. We look forward to seeing you again very soon. In the mean- time, keep well and keep safe. Village Hall, Burberry Road, Buckden Tel: 0345 045 5225 www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/library Hello from a (partly) re - opened Preschool! At present, we are only accepting a few children back to Preschool, but it has been lovely to welcome back these children and their families, and see familiar faces again! Of course, it ’ s not business as usual yet and all government advice is being followed to ensure that the staff, children and their families are as comfortable and well - protected as possi- ble. We have been teaching the children a new handwashing song to encourage them to wash their hands even more thor- oughly than usual to reduce the risk of any transmission of infection. We will be monitoring our procedures and any change to government guidelines closely. The children have been making beautiful brightly - coloured rainbows to display in our windows for everyone to see and we hope they will bring a smile to your face as you walk past. And because life goes on, even in these odd times, we are sup- porting our school leavers as they get ready for ‘ big school ’ , even though the transition process will be rather an unusual one. During our closure period, the staff and children were growing some vegetables and these have now been transferred to a planter at Preschool. The children have been watering them daily and learning all about planting, growing, size and change. They have also been enjoying role - playing running and visiting a garden centre. For those children who are still not back with us, there are plenty of suggested activities for home learning and fun on our Facebook page and a growing number of useful links on our website on the ‘ Learning at Home ’ page. By the time you read this, even though we have only just re - opened, the summer holidays will be in sight. So as the end of this most unusual school year approaches, we would like to do something usual and thank all our supporters: the families, committee members and donors who help Preschool to be a success, particularly everyone at Nisa. Thank you! Committee enquiries: contact Jo Chillmaid (Chairperson) at buckdenpreschoolchairperson@gmail.com o r on 07393650084.
