July2021

16 Buckden Roundabout July 2021 School & Pre - School With just a few weeks of term left, the children have been loving the good weather and spending lots of time outdoors. We ’ re so lucky to have our large, shaded balcony, allowing them to enjoy the fresh air while still having an area to stay out of the sun. We ’ ve welcomed lots of new starters and their families this term, and they are all settling in well. It ’ s that time of the year when parents, carers, staff and some- times pre - schoolers get a little emotional as we get ready to say goodbye to those children moving up to big school, to- gether with their families. We ’ ve been preparing them with more structured activities, practising changing their clothes for PE sessions, and lots of pencil control activities. Mrs Woodward is coming to meet children going on to Buckden Primary on the 29 th of June and they ’ re looking forward to showing off their writing, artwork and the amazing plants they ’ ve grown. And, of course, the goldfish! On the 12 th of July, we will be holding a leavers ’ lunch and party, followed by a graduation ceremony. Hankies at the ready! We will miss our leavers, and their carers and families, and wish them all the very best for the future. Finally, as the school year draws to a close, we want to thank everyone who has supported us through this challenging time. We ’ re so grateful to the children and their families for cheer- fully adapting to the changes we ’ ve made to keep everyone safe throughout the pandemic. We look forward to a time when we can relax a little more! We would like to thank Nisa for their continued, generous donation of our snack foods and Sally Adinell, librarian at Buckden Library, for all her help and enthusiasm. Thank you also to Jo Harvey at the village hall for always re- sponding so quickly and positively to our queries and needs, and to everyone who has donated to our collection pot at Nisa. Places are filling up fast for September, so please contact us as soon as possible on 01480 810600 to arrange a visit or apply for a place at Preschool. BUCKDEN CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL (Primary Academy Trust) June 2021 We returned to the second half of the summer term on Monday 7 th June after a glorious week of weather during the half term break. We have made the most of the good weather with a lot of our lessons being held outside in ei- ther the playground or the playing field. Our children have been growing plants from seeds across the school, as part of a push of positivity and looking for- ward to the future. After growing these fabulous plants we had a plant sale in the playground. One of the positive things about the last year is we have done a lot more out- door learning. Therefore, all the money raised from the sale will go into improving our outdoor environment. Year 2 have been looking at the importance of Buckden High Street and how it has changed since the Tudor period. Rich- ard Storey from the Buckden Local History Society has been helping us greatly with our research and you can visit www.buckdenhistory.co.uk/school to see all our hard work and photographs. On Tuesday 15 th June we took part in the Whole School Big Sing as part of a World Record Breaking Event, the children really enjoyed the singing and put in a lot of hard work and practice to make it happen. As mentioned in the June issue of the Roundabout we were unfortunately subject to some vandalism and an attempted break - in costing thousands of pounds worth of damage dur- ing the Easter holidays. We have now had CCTV installed around the school premises, but please if you see any suspi- cious activity on or around school grounds out of hours please call the local police. The Parish Council has planned a safer schools programme, aimed at improving road safety for us and improving air quality. This began on Monday 7 th June and means that School Lane will be closed to traffic from Mill Road to the junction with Greenway at certain times. These times are: 8:15am to 9:15am and 2:45pm to 3:30pm. This should make it safer for everyone arriving and leaving school and residents, reduce emissions and so make the air less dirty. Children who live in the village are encouraged to walk or cycle to school. Parents who need to drive can park in the Millennium carpark at the village hall and walk from there, using the zebra crossing. Did you know …? Every second, your body produces 25 million new cells. That means in 15 seconds, you will have produced more cells than there are people in the United States. Despite accounting for 2% of our body mass, the brain uses 20% of our oxygen and blood supply. About 60% of your body is made up of water. From osgpc.com
