July 2022
18 Buckden Roundabout July 2022 Jubilee events The Jubilee Beacon was designed and created by a local organisa- tion Overloaded. The beacon was lit on Thursday 2 nd June at the Recreation Ground and will be permanently based in the Towers. At the Parish Council we were very impressed by their ethos and operation. Read about them, in their own words, below. At Overloaded we believe in an inclusive world, supporting young people to build confidence and succeed. We also recognise there are many barriers to achieve education- al and personal goals. With over seventeen years teaching and specialist experience Rachel Temple and her growing team specialise in children on reduced timetables or at risk of exclusion, Information and Guidance (IAG), Special Edu- cation Needs (SEN), Looked after Children (LAC), Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH), Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP). Offering bespoke timetables to support young people with barriers to education, offering tuition, 1:1 sessions, group sessions, job coaching, wellbe- ing sessions, parental support, Strategic Support, EHCP guid- ance and Positive Support Planning. The learning and sessions pro- vided is bespoke and focuses on how a young person will engage, this involves creative thinking, lots of sensory and practical activities and a differ- ent environment to school. Life skills and confidence building are a key focus. Examples of activities include running an online and physical shop in Fishers Yard, St Neots, making items to sell, fitness sessions, bike repair sessions, upcycling, fishing and community awareness; all of these embed the Maths and English skills young people need to gain employment or transition back into school. More recently the young people at Overloaded have been involved in designing a Beacon for the Queens Platinum Jubilee, this involved researching, designing and working with local craftsmen to produce a sustainable Bea- con made from recycled products. We also provide an outreach team that works with young people in schools, supporting them academically, emotion- ally and strategically. Overloaded currently works with young people from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cam- bridgeshire, managing local authority referrals and private referrals. Buckden Village Club (BVC) has been one of the community focus areas for the extended weekend events. On Thursday 2 June it was terrific to see so many people come out for the beacon lighting at the recreation field. As the sun set the beacon lit up a early summer evening. On Friday 3 June much of the attraction was rightly at the Tow- ers, however by 5pm all of the tables out side of BVC were full of families and some picnic blankets were appearing too. The Reckless provided live band music into the evening which proved very entertaining, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. It was our pleasure to be able to support the Village Hall Trust and their team with the pensioners afternoon tea party on Satur- day 4 June by opening up the bar area. The main event was Buckden Cricket Club 1 st team who played Upwood Cricket Club for the Platinum Jubilee Trophy, sponsored by Days of Buckden butchers. The cricket match was won by Buckden CC!! The trophy was awarded to captain Lawrie Marsh by Martin Hassell, district councillor. Days of Buckden attended the match to provide a quite spectacu- lar BBQ offering, which was well used by spectators. A great game played out in some lovely sunshine, after the short rain delay early on. The continued success of our cricket team will hopefully see more people coming out to support them as the season continues. Saturday was also a great opportunity to use our big screens to present the Queen ’ s Derby race at Epsom, followed by England v Hungary football and concluded with the Queen ’ s jubilee con- cert. There were plenty of people dancing along to the bands and performers they were watching (maybe even a little air gui- tar along to Brian May). Sunday 5 June started a little damp, to say the least. Plans were to support a 'bring and share' lunch on the recreation field and, rather than cancel it, BVC invited the community to bring their picnics and parties inside with us. It was lovely to greet new pa- trons along with our regulars. There was a huge amount of food brought to share, whilst enjoying the Queen's pageant on the big screen. It's been a memorable and exciting few days and we hope that your club has provided an appropriate focus for your celebra- tions. Thank you Buckden, and we look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.
