Spring is a busy time for burglars who are on the lookout for vulnerable outbuildings and sheds to break into. Gardening equipment is a prime target once the warmer weather arrives as it may be sold on easily at car boot sales. • Make sure any garden gates are lockable on the inside and can ’ t be unlocked by reaching over the top of the gate. • When using a padlock make sure it ’ s good quality, ide- ally with a hardened shackle. • Add trellis to fence panels as it is too weak to climb on. • Check for any vulnerabilities in the perimeter fencing and repair if necessary. • For an additional level of security, video doorbell sys- tems can often be extended with additional cameras in a rear garden or stand - alone cameras that work in conjunction with wi - fi and a smart device. • That would alert you to any potential intruder even when you are away from your home. • Keep bikes locked up together inside a shed with a good - quality lock, and /or secured to an immovable object, such as a post bolted to the floor. • Consider marking high - value property with Smart Wa- ter or another permanent security marking system, this enables the item to be traced if it is recovered by police. • A stand alone shed alarm would most likely cause a thief to leave the area empty handed if activated. • Consider PIR security lighting that will be activated by movement, as this will attract attention. • Solar powered versions are available if there is no power source nearby.
