13 Buckden Roundabout July 2024 Village News Buckden Neighbourhood Watch WHATSAPP GROUP CHATS ARE TARGETED BY FRAUDSTERS WhatsApp group members are being warned they could be targeted by criminals. The fraud often begins when a member of the group receives a WhatsApp audio call from the fraudster, pretending or claim- ing to be another member of the group. This is done to gain the individual ’ s trust, and often the scam- mer will use a false profile picture and/or display name, so at first glance it would appear to be a genuine member of the group. The fraudster will tell the victim they are sending them a one - time passcode which will allow them to join an upcoming vid- eo call for group members. The criminal then asks the victim to share this passcode with them so they can be ‘’ registered ‘’ for the video call. The criminal is asking for a registration code to register the victim ’ s WhatsApp account to a new device so they can take over their account. Once the fraudster has access to the victim ’ s WhatsApp ac- count, they will enable two - step verification which makes it impossible for the victim to regain or access their account. Other members of the group, or friends and family in the vic- tim ’ s contacts, will then be messaged asking them to transfer money urgently as they are in desperate need of help. HOW TO SECURE YOUR WHATSAPP ACCOUNT: Set up two - step verification (2SV ) to give an extra layer of pro- tection to your account. Tap Settings>Account>Two - step verification > Enable. CALL. If a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person outside of WhatsApp to confirm their identity. REPORT SPAM MESSAGES OR BLOCK A SENDER WITHIN WHATSAPP. Press and hold on the message bubble, select ‘ Report ’ and then follow the instructions. This was due to the number of children who were on their waiting list and the number of children ready to move from Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10). There are already twenty children in the new Troop which meets on a Wednesday at their Headquarters in Lucks Lane. Some of the ac- tivities they have done include camping, day trip to London, escape room, kayaking, learn- ing emergency aid, and learning magic from a magician. Activi- ties planned for the next few months include backwoods cooking, bouldering wall, climbing, expedi- tion obstacle course and a sleepover on HMS Belfast. Sebastian said, “ I really love what we do. This includes the range of activities and the independence we are given over what we want to do. We are given lots of opportunities to de- cide what activities we would like to do. ” Martha, who joined when the new Troop was opened said, “ I really liked camp, making food on the campfire and going to London. ” Danika, lead volunteer for the Group said, “ It ’ s wonderful to be able to introduce young people from our village to Scouting. The best bit about being a volunteer is seeing our Scouts enjoying the activities, earning badges and learning skills for life. ” She added, “ All of the children in the Group will learn and develop skills ranging from teamwork and inde- pendence to leadership and decision making. ” The Group are looking for volunteers to help either with the children or in background roles. This can be helping to run a Beaver Colony (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) a Cub Pack or a Scout Troop. Volunteering can also be around helping at a camp, being a trustee or doing some administration or shop- ping.
