June 2022
19 Buckden Roundabout June 2022 Village News The highlight of our library calendar in May must have been the Anglo - Saxon Buckden exhibition, and the library events around it. From the very busy kids ’ craft session, amazing Lego model (still on display in the library) and in depth look at some of the finds, we were honoured to be involved in such a fantas- tic local project. We would also like to say a special thank you to Barry Jobling and The Local History Society for the super display boards which now grace the library walls and offer a brief summary of the wider exhibition content. They are well worth a look if you are passing … Jubilee Craft On Saturday 28 th May from 10am until 12.30pm , we will be running a Jubilee craft in preparation for the following week- end. There will be a choice of craft activities, no need to book in advance, and no charge (although a suggested donation of £1 per child would be very welcome if you can, to cover mate- rials). Engage – Read a Little Aloud Our next Engage event at Buckden will be on Wednesday 29 th June at 2.30pm . The Read a Little Aloud programme has been greeted with much enthusiasm in other libraries, and online, so we are trying out a session here in Buckden. We have two fantastic reader/storytellers to take you through an hour of listening to all sorts, around the theme of ‘ Tales of the Unexpected ’ – no, not the 1980s TV series, but the chance to look at things in a different way. Expect excerpts from nov- els, poems, perhaps plays and newspapers … the chance to lis- ten, discuss, chat and join us for a cuppa and cake, and a bit of a laugh! This is a free event but donations are always welcome to cover costs. Places are limited and pre - booking is essential either at the library, emailing stneotsreferral@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or phoning 0345 045 5225. The 17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop- ment which set out a 15 - year plan to achieve the Goals. To- day, progress is being made in many places, but, overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. We all need to do our bit to bridge the widening gap. Why should you care? The crises we are faced with such as rising costs, shortage of goods, and pandemics are not a coinci- dental phase that will pass. These are the new norm unless we instigate change. Governments and world leaders can set goals, provide the tools, infrastructure and the guidance to steer the general direction but to make a real impact we “ The People ” need to take the necessary steps to change the way we do things on a daily basis! Our livelihood as well as our children ’ s and future generations are dependent on us making our environment safe, sustainable and thriving. What can you do? Every little step we take locally can have the desired effect globally. United Nation has provided a list of guidelines on how we can help at the local level to achieve the global goals and if you want to do your bit the first step is to copy the following link on your Web browser and start making an impact: https://www.un.org/node/143154#unplug. If you want to know more about United Nations Sustainability Development Goals copy the following link on to your Web Browser: https://www.un.org/en/actnow/about. There is also a presentation by Sir David Attenborough you may find informa- tive.
