June 2022

20 Buckden Roundabout June 2022 Village News Coronation memories Janet was on The Mall in London and seven months pregnant with her third child on coronation day. Her husband, who was in the Royal Navy, and had entered a lottery for the chance to buy tickets to attend. He managed to get two tickets and Janet went on the train with her sister, Jean, who was very excited. She and Jean watched troops and carriages go by, including the queen in her beautiful coach. There were representatives of lots of countries, their royal families and militaries. She par- ticularly remembered a big cheer for the Queen of Tonga - a huge woman who stole everyone ’ s hearts. Janet recalls she was lucky to have a good seat with lots of other Navy delegates. It was a long ceremony but the crowds were well behaved and they enjoyed the day. Janet regrets she didn ’ t get any good photographs – whenever she stood up to take a photo all the Navy people stood up, too. Her photos were consequently full of white Navy hats and not much else! What can you remember of the Coronation celebrations? Would you like to share those memories with us?
