I saw a tree, blown over, across a path that I had walked down half an hour earlier. The sight of trees moving with each gust and continued onslaught was both fearsome, and exciting. This evening though, as I sit and write this, there is barely a trace of a breeze, the sky is clear and I find myself recalling the morning I sat in here, in St Mary's, and listened to the storm overhead. Now, after a zoom meeting (I used the church wifi to avoid my dog talking whilst I wasn't on mute!) I am looking up at the roof. Sitting here I am remembering the noise of the wind rush- ing over the roof in the storm. That day the roof, if not rattling, was pretty noisy. In my mind there was a connection to the storm which Jesus calmed for the disciples who were afraid. He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘ Peace! Be still! ’ Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm (Mark 4: 39). The area in the church with all the pews - it goes up to the step which marks the start of the chancel - is called the nave. Nave comes from navis, a latin word meaning 'ship'. When I sat and looked up at the noisy roof in the storm I was thinking of the church as a ship, in a storm. I was thinking about the scared disciples in the boat, and of Jesus, their friend, saying peace, be still. Jesus is with us in storms, in all kinds of storms, in life, Jesus is in the boat, Jesus is with all those who need him. It is too easy to forget this, this nearness to God, as the storm rages and in whatever the storm is manifest in. This, though, is the faith I confess: that Jesus is with me, is with us, in the boat, in the storm and in the trouble, and says Peace! Be Still.
