March 2022

14 Buckden Roundabout March 2022 Village News Buckden WI At our February Meeting we en- joyed another talk by Barry Job- ling entitled Buckden Beneath your Feet – Bloor Homes Estate at Stirtloe. His illustrated talk was all about the archaeological find- ings at the site when a team from Oxford Archaeology were on a dig. Barry was one of the volun- teers who helped with dig so was able to talk very enthusiasti- cally about the things that were found from a personal experi- ence. The major excavation of 2019 at Stirtloe revealed Buckden to be an important village in times past, including the prehistoric period where 50 Bronze Age cremations were recovered near the Shell Garage. The Anglo Saxon period showed a great hall had been there and is believed to be the largest hall complex in England. Also, a deep well and malting barns. Sunken feature buildings were discovered with ovens outside. The Saxons did lots of tanning and dyeing, as evidence of this was found on the site. Barry told us of the interesting finds, which included pin beat- ers for weaving, fragments of bones, and an inscribed needle case. A special find was an ornate bone comb 9 inches long which was used to comb a beard. As you would expect, coins, animal and human bones, tools, fragments of glass and pottery were also found. Another special find was a Christian Cross brooch and a rare plough coulter. Barry enthused over these. Barry was privileged to be asked to name the streets on the Bloor Homes Estate and included Longhall Road, Saxon and Viking Way and there will be more as the Estate is completed. Barry kept the audience enthralled as he is a very good speak- er, and we all enjoyed the evening. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 1st March at 7:30pm in the Millard Suite and it will be our Annual General Meeting followed by a social event.
