In 1886, Buckden had five blacksmith ’ s forges, the one adja- cent to The George also shod oxen and even geese (by driv- ing them through warm tar and then sand) for their journey to the Christmas market in London. Other industries included brick making, pottery, hide curing, rope making, saddle making, malting, basket - weaving and boot and legging making. Many people worked on farms 6 am – 6 pm six days per week for 10/ - per week. However, after their hard labours they could retire to one of 18 public houses and buy for less than sixpence a pint of beer, an ounce of tobacco, a box of matches and receive a free clay pipe. Beer was brewed in the Lion and the Vine and most smaller beer houses. A nine gallon barrel cost 7/6. From Buckden C.E. School 1871 – 1971 Centenary Year, FWR Claxton, 1971
