12 Buckden Roundabout May2022 Village News The Beautiful Bluebells of Brampton Wood The Huntingdonshire Local Group of the Wildlife Trust invites you to come and experience the sight and scent of a carpet of bluebells in this ancient woodland, which lies on our doorstep. You are welcome to share this enchanting scene by partici- pating in a guided walk on Sunday 1 st May at 10.30 am. The Voluntary Wardens at Brampton Wood will lead us through this woodland, where a rich variety of flora can be seen. Their aim will be to highlight the beautiful scent, colour and freshness of the bluebells, which encapsulate the essence of a traditional English Spring. We also expect to see other woodland flora such as wood anemone, primrose and dogs mercury. In addition we should see butterflies such as brim- stone, speckled wood and orange tip and we will listen for the singing of the woodland birds. Everyone is most welcome to attend. Registered Charity No: 1000412 Buckden Learning Group Update During the Winter term, BLG ran a 10 week course called ‘ Eye of the Be- holder ’, with 32 attendees. We sped through the centuries, from the an- cient Greeks to the present day, look- ing at a huge number of works of art. We learnt a lot about how we look at things and how we as- sess them, and saw how taste and fashion in art had changed through the ages. The first half of the course was held on Zoom (due to the Plan B Covid limitations); however, we re- turned to our ‘ home ’ at Buckden Towers after half term. With slightly reduced numbers (compared to the previous term) we moved back to the main house and returned to serving drinks. True ‘ normality ’ at last. At the time of writing (April 5) we are about to open up enrol- ment for our next course, called ‘ How Victorian England react- ed to Darwin's “ unsettling ” news ’ . We will spend 5 weeks learning how Darwin ’ s ideas were sensationally received by the intellectual world, by the church, and by the British public. We will be back on Zoom with this long - distanced tutor who specialises in courses about the history of science. In June we return to Buckden Towers for a short course about the Russian Revolution with a local tutor (see advert). This will be followed by further face - to - face courses that have been planned through to Easter 2023. As usual, our courses have been interspersed with some indi- vidual sessions on Zoom; this is expected to continue. A recent session on Chaucer ’ s Wife of Bath, by Val Scullion, was very well received. Although hopeful about the future, we recognise that new restrictions could be imposed at any time, but look forward optimistically. Buckden Learning Group The Russian Revolution 1917 - 33 Tutor: Stephen Corley This course will include the background his- tory to 1914 and the ideologies of Marxism and Leninism: the two revolutions of 1917 and the Civil War; the New Economic Policy and the Power Struggle following Lenln ’ s death; Stalin ’ s ‘ revolution ’ from above; Collectivisation of Agriculture and Industrialisation. Dates June 7, 14, 28 and July 5 2022 (gap on June 21 as tutor unavailable) 10.30 – 11.45 Venue: Conference Room at St Claret Centre, Buckden Towers Please call Bridget Hale on 01480 216391 for all other details.
