For some it is a reminder of a celebration or a public holiday. May Day, at the beginning of the month of May can bring to us many happy thoughts as we enjoy the celebrations. May Day can also bring to us the worst of thoughts. “ May Day ” are the words that many may dread as an aircraft faces the possibility of a crash. Whilst serving as a Minister in the Hebri- des in the 1980’ s I recall many of the islanders clambering up the hill side. The regular flight to the island had come down with the tragic loss of a life, and others injured. As we made our way up there were all kinds of thoughts that would come to mind as we wondered what we would see when we arrived, and knowing that we would know some of the passengers. It was a routine flight. Daily the aircraft would have safely made this journey, so what could have gone wrong this time? Every pilot would tell you that trusting the instruments is vital in reaching the destination. This time they trusted in their human logic instead. Looking out they recognised the terrain. There was only one inlet that could fit the description of what they saw, they thought. But they were wrong. If they trusted the instruments as their guide above their instincts the tragedy would have been avoided. On the journey of life tragedy can often be avoided when we know where we should be looking for our guide. The bible speaks about that too. The bible says in Psalm 119 verse 105 “ Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. “ The word of God is the instrument we need to rely on in our spir- itual journey. Tragedy may often be there when we rely on our own wisdom, but God has something better for us when we rely on His guidance. Sharing with you in the love of our Lord. Blessings to all of you, Jon Magee, Perry Baptists Memorial for Anne Nicol The Knot Gardeners have been very saddened by the death in November 2021 of our long - standing colleague and friend, Anne Nicol. Anne and her husband, Ben, were actively involved with the development of the Garden and were a major part of the gardening team from 1995. In addition to helping with the planting, weeding and clipping, Anne was a tireless fund - raiser for many years. The Annu- al Plant Sale held in the grounds was very much Anne ’ s project and she ensured that a portion of the revenue was allocated to the Knot Garden for necessary maintenance and new plantings. In addition to all the work entailed in the organisation of this she regularly produced home - made jams and conserves, Lavender bags and potted plants which she would bring to the Garden for visitors to buy. Latterly, when not strong enough to do a morning ’ s weeding or digging, she would come along mid - morning and make the gardeners a cup of coffee and always provide biscuits to fortify us! For her funeral in December we made her a wreath incorporating many of the Knot Garden ’ s special plants to place on her coffin but we also wanted to make a more lasting memorial. We have therefore purchased a white climbing rose, Rosa banksiae, which has now been planted by Anne ’ s son, Charles , at the corner of the pergola where we hope it will flourish for many years to come.
