Gransden Lodge ’ s brief career as a motor racing circuit was important enough to be considered as the home of British mo- tor racing; however, Silverstone airfield was chosen instead and, as they say, the rest is history! Shortly after that the run- ways were dug up and the airfield returned to agricultural use. In 1990 the Cambridge University Gliding Club relocated from Duxford to Gransden Lodge and is still there to this day, mak- ing Gransden Lodge one of the most important soaring centres in the UK. The Canadian connection mentioned earlier lives on. In memory of the 801 servicemen from 405 Squadron who lost their lives in World Ward 2, the 405 Squadron Association funded a stained glass window and Book of Remembrance in St Bartholo- mew's Church, Great Gransden. Organised both by the Gransden Society, the Window was installed in 1989 and re - dedicated on 19 May 2019. Most years a contin- gent of 405 Squadron personnel visit the people of the Gransdens to participate in events, pay their respects and keep alive a wonder- ful and lasting friendship.
