November 2021
12 Buckden Roundabout November 2021 Village News Buckden WI On Tuesday, October 5th we wel- comed two visitors to our meeting and enjoyed a very informative talk by one of our members, Jessi- ca Blagbrough. Jessica spoke with a passion about Vikings - how they lived, dressed, prepared and cooked their food and how her involvement with re - enactments, (the sights, smells and tastes), has fuelled her desire to discover more about them. Re - enactment groups share their knowledge and skills by mak- ing their own costumes from authentic materials, crafting cooking utensils, fire pits and wooden A framed tents. Often groups get together to perform re - enactments and ven- ues can vary from a field to the grounds of abbeys such as Whitby. There are strict guidelines to where and how the groups can camp and arenas have to be checked out before- hand to ensure that the site is large enough for the number of tents, there must be fresh water available and the ground needs to be suitable (not concrete) for soft shoes. For health and safety reasons fires must be well above the ground in fire boxes and food cooked on the premises cannot be given to the public (partly in case of food poisoning but also because the players need it to eat themselves!) It was a most entertaining and enjoyable evening with lots of artefacts to look at and learn about. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, November 2nd at 7.30pm in the Millard Suite of the Village Hall. Becci Boxer will be our guest and she will be bringing along a selection of ceramic vas- es for us to decorate. They will then be taken away for firing and returned to us at a later date. It promises to be a lot of fun so do come and join us - visitors are always welcome.
