October 2021
12 Buckden Roundabout October 2021 Village News Buckden WI At long last September saw us back in the Village Hall after an absence of 18 months! It was a huge step towards normality and, although we had held get - togethers in our President ’ s gar- den, it was always dependent on our fickle weather, so, to be back in our Hall was something to cele- brate. The evening was spent catching up on each other ’ s news but mainly hearing a very interesting talk by Bill Templeton on “ Huntingdon High Street – A Bridge through Time ”. As the title suggests it focused on the history of both Hunting- don and Godmanchester, particularly on areas around the bridge. Both towns date back to Roman times, especially Godman- chester, and were very important as they were the first towns where you could actually cross the River Ouse as it tended to be too foggy upstream. In terms of trade there was the A1 to the north and south and two railway lines, one in Godman- chester and the one that still exists in Huntingdon. The two lines didn ’ t actually meet so one would have had to leave the train in Godmanchester, cross the bridge and contin- ue walking up to Huntingdon station! Bill ’ s talk was full of really interesting facts and figures – did you know that there were 16 churches in Huntingdon; that the bridge is a grade 1 listed building and that in years gone by there was a toll levied to cross it? Our next meeting is on October 5th in the Millard Suite at the Village Hall at 7.30pm and our speaker will be our very own Jessica Blagbrough on “ Living as a Viking in the 21st century ”. There will also be Viking food to taste! New members will be warmly welcomed and for more infor- mation please contact: Ruth Nicholas – 07957 334142 Judith Armitage – 01480 811717 Buckden Junior Football Club As we prepare for the start of a new season, we are looking for- ward to what we hope will be an uninterrupted period this year.
