More than 80 people came together on a hot day in August to celebrate with HCCN the amazing people who make one of Huntingdon ’ s best kept secrets the place to be, at their new base at the MS Therapy Centre at Bradbury House (on May- field Road, next to the St John Ambulance centre). Hunts Community Cancer Network is a local charity helping people across the Huntingdonshire region with a cancer diag- nosis. “ We are a hidden gem and want to raise awareness so that people tell their family and friends that we are there for them - after all, 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime ” said trustee and event organiser Gill Monsell. HCCN and HCCN the charity were created as the result of the inspiration, friendship and energy of two remarkable women, Gini Melesi and Susan Moore. They met when Gini was help- ing Susan with her cancer treatment and Gini, then lead nurse pioneering a community - based oncology nursing team, found a treatment which extended Susan's life by several years. Susan applied herself to what could be done for the people and families being helped by the HCCN nurses. Her top priority was to find a way for people with cancer to meet informally and be able to talk to each other, to be with people who really understood and shared their life experience of cancer. Graham Moore, Susan ’ s husband, remarked “ It was wonderful to see Susan's work recognised with local and national awards but her unrealised ambition was to find that welcoming place that could be called a home for HCCN, where various activities could be delivered under one roof. Unfortunately, as with so many things, COVID got in the way of that happening, but now it has been achieved, and wonderfully! Susan would have been delighted to see you all here today, and to see the way HCCN continues to thrive. Her ambition has been delivered in the achievement we celebrate today. ” Cllr David Landon Cole, Mayor of Huntingdon, said of the event “ HCCN is a wonderful organisation that offers people suffering from cancer support groups, yoga and exercise, community nursing and the opportunity to talk to someone who understands. If you'd like to find out more, they're on Facebook or at https://www.hccnthecharity.org/ ” Five HCCN volunteers were recognised at Hunts Forum's vol- unteer awards and the Mayor was delighted to be able to pre- sent certificates to Janet and Anthony Button, Chris Moulds (represented by Carol George), Lynn Reader, and Jill Wiles (represented by Pat Burridge) for their remarkable contribu- tions. HCCN offers support before, during and after a cancer diagno- sis. “ Everything we do is underpinned by evidence that it helps people dealing with cancer – emotional wellbeing, exercise and healthy eating. Uniquely we offer pre - habilitation at the point of diagnosis. We also offer a full day of activities at Brad- bury House in Huntingdon every Friday. Our Men ’ s Group meets every Wednesday morning at the Montagu Club Hun- tingdon and our Women ’ s Group meets every Wednesday evening at Bradbury House. We offer activities across Hunting- donshire ” said trustee and programme manager Sallie Craw- ley. HCCN needs volunteers to support the delivery of activities and spread the word. They also need fundraisers. Just get in touch if you can offer support at info@hccnthecharity.org
