Buckden - a Huntingdonshire Village

PB2.6.1 A 1982 John Piper painting known as “Storm over Buckden”. On seeing one of his earlier paintings showing similar clouds George VI is said to have remarked “You don’t seem to have had much luck with the weather, Mr.Piper”. Reproduced with the kind permission of Mr. Luke Piper PB2.6.2 A 1991 lithograph by Rigby Graham . Two things to note. The man in the foreground is the poet John Clare on his walk from Epping to Helpston. It took him three days during which he had “nothing to eat except grass”. While Clare has been brought in by the artist’s imagination, surely the possibly female figure riding a bicycle and carrying a lawn-mower over her shoulder must have caught Graham’s eye while he was here? Who was she-or he? Reproduced with the kind permission of the artist via Goldmark Gallery
