Buckden - a Huntingdonshire Village

PB3.8.1 The ancient mechanism of the church clock. The wooden frame and much of the works are original and are about 400 years old. The spindle on the right drives the hands on the two faces via five separate gear trains. The chiming mechanism works but awaits an enthusiast to connect it to one of the bells on the floor below. PB3.8.2 This milestone survived the dualling of the Great North Road. It ought to read 61 miles but the ‘1’ has been defaced or eroded. PB3.8.3 This memorial was in the Baptist Chapel in the High Street but can now be found at the Perry Baptist church. PB3.8.4 Every self-respecting village should have its own sign. Buckden’s millennium example at the start of Mill Road has its post set in a millstone. Swans occasionally find The Valley pond a suitable place to nest but not the long pond in the Towers grounds near the church. PB3.8.5 “The Green Memorial” in the High Street. Adjacent to the stone is a modern plaque giving details of the circumstances of the young men’s deaths. PB3.8.6 The oldest post box in the parish.
