          NEIGHBOURHOODWATCH (NHW)

          Local Crime.

April was another quiet month for serious crime

in the village, the only one reported to us being

an attempted entry to a house in St. Hugh’s Rd

on 22nd. Although rare, these incidents often

create aminor wake-up call if only in the immedi-

ate vicinity. Given the normally high standard of

security in modern homes (except perhaps out-

buildings), the best protection in usually quiet

neighbourhoods is constant vigilance - being

alert to suspicious persons and unusual vehicles

at all times but especially at night.

          Scams.

Scams are in the news again if only because of

the proliferation of them particularly on the tele-

phone and on-line. Yet, the Trading Standards

Institute estimates that only some 5% of them

are reported. Highlighting any individual one is

now pointless but we can recommend a new

We have had an encouraging response for new

members resulting from an invitation to those in

Buckden who use eCops to consider registering

with the national NW programme. This provides

a much more comprehensive range of crime

The inadequacies of the 101 non-emergency

number, chiefly in respect of its poor response

times, are now well known and efforts to im-

prove the service are promised! We would be

pleased to have details of any poor experiences

          encountered.

          Contact details.

Notwithstanding the above comment, report an

incident or suspicious behaviour to the single

          non-emergency number 101. Call 999 if a crime

          is in progress or threatened.
