SCHOOL & PRE-SCHOOL
BUCKDEN CHURCH OF ENG-
LAND SCHOOL
(Primary Academy Trust)
October 2014
We have had a busy time at school with a variety of
events taking place.
We all enjoyed European Week when each class chose a
country in Europe to study. We learned about the culture,
the history, the geography, the food and language of our
chosen countries. The week ended on European Lan-
guages Day when we came to school dressed in national
costume or as a hero from a European country. A com-
petition had previously been organised for the children to
create a menu from any European country and the winner
of the competition helped the kitchen team to prepare his
menu based on French food of crudities, coq-au-vin and
chocolate mousse.
Our parents came into school to learn how the children
study maths on our maths afternoon. After the maths
event we held a MacMillan Coffee afternoon, when our
Year 6 children helped serve tea, coffee and the cakes
that they had made. The total raised for the MacMillan
Cancer charity was £135.35. Thank you to all parents
who supported the afternoon.
Our Year 4 children visited Hinchingbrooke Hospital as
part of a new scheme at the hospital engaging with the
local community and schools in setting up a new ‘999
club’. The scope around this scheme is twofold with chil-
dren learning about the inner workings of a hospital and
dispersing any fears children may have about coming into
hospital. The visit linked up with work in the classroom.
Our Year 5 children had a Viking themed day when the
children came to school dressed in Viking costume. Dur-
ing the day the children took part in a wide variety of ac-
tivities based on life in the Viking era. The day started
with a presentation about who the Vikings were, where
they came from and how they lived. The children were
able to handle Saxon objects and artefacts, explore Vi-
king foods, write in the style of the Vikings, design weap-
ons and shields.
We had an art day when the children in Year 4, 5 and 6
created work for the children’s art exhibition at St Marys
Church on November 8th. Please take time to go along
to the exhibition at the church to see our children’s work.
At the end of the half term our Year 6 children went on a
residential visit to France – more details about their visit
next month!!
The school has had trouble with vandals climbing over
the school fence. The school playground has been lit-
tered with broken glass and the PE shed and the sheds
around the Early Years area have been broken into and
the equipment scattered over the playground. If anyone
sees anything suspicious or anyone in the playground
during the evening or weekends or have any information
please can they contact the local police.
Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who donated Sains-
bury's vouchers, allowing us to order some great new
equipment . We're eagerly awaiting our delivery, including
a trampoline!
October began with the children learning about Sukkot,
the Jewish harvest festival, and getting into the swing of
our 'letter of the week' programme. They enjoyed lovely
autumn walks too, collecting leaves and conkers. October
ended with fun Halloween activities and our legendary
Halloween Party. If you came along, many thanks for your
support - we hope you had a great time!
In November, the children will be learning about Diwali,
the Hindu Festival of Light, and the older children will con-
tinue on with their weekly literacy sessions in the library,
preparing them for big school. Meanwhile the staff and
committee are already preparing for the biggest fundrais-
ing event in our preschool year – the Christmas Fayre.
This is always a hugely popular and sociable event in the
village, so take a look at our flyer below and mark the
date on your calendar! We will be at the Christmas Lights
Festival too.
