FRIENDS IN DEED
The annual Friends in Deed Members’ Lunch was held on 2
nd
September and our thanks
to all those who contributed such a wonderful variety of food and drink, which was much
enjoyed by all.
The
AGM
will be held on 12
th
October 2016 at 4pm in the Living Stones Room in St Mary’s,
immediately following on from the Drop-in Café. The guest speaker will be Pauline Meakins
from the Alzheimer’s Society. Her talk, ‘Living with Dementia’, will also cover the role of the
Society and should be most interesting and relevant. We hope that as many of you as pos-
sible will come along, not only Friends in Deed but anyone else who is interested in what we do – and you could
have a cuppa and a piece of cake at the Drop-in beforehand!
There may be people in the village who can’t get out and about much, or who would just like someone to talk to. If
you know of anyone who would like an occasional visitor, please do get in touch with us and we will see what we
can do to help.
Our Drop-in Café is open on the second Wednesday of each month in the Living Stones Room in St Mary’s
Church, 2.30pm to 4pm. If you like homemade cakes, tea and coffee, and a friendly atmosphere, why not come
along and join us? Transport is available within the village on request (see below).

Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box appeal.
As you know the Methodist Church are taking part in the above appeal and shoe boxes will
be collected in November. Leaflets are available in Saint Mary’s Church, Methodist Church,
Saint Hugh’s Church the Library and the Village Hall.
Are you able to knit a puppet for a Christmas shoebox. If so, knitting patterns are available at
the Methodist Church. Thank you for the ones I have already received, it is much appreciat-
ed.
Operation Christmas Child is a worthwhile charity making a difference at Christmas, by giving shoe boxes contain-
ing small gifts to children in poor countries. If you would like more information then please contact Carol Swep-
stone 810053 Thank you.
BUCKDEN WI
At our September meeting we enjoyed an interesting and informative talk on Hypnosis and
Hypnotherapy given by Bernice Hardwick. We were a little apprehensive at the outset,
fearing we might be put into a trance-like state and asked to perform embarrassing feats.
Instead we were given a relaxing exercise, similar to Yoga, undertaken in our chairs fol-
lowed by a question and answer session.
We all went home having learned some valuable techniques in the art of relaxation to help
us cope with the stresses and strains of our busy lives.
Our October meeting will be on Tuesday, 4th October and our speaker will be Ted Coney who will be giving us a
talk entitled "On the Edge – family life and paintings". The competition is for a teddy bear.
VILLAGE NEWS
Buckden Friends
A big thank you to all who supported our Shelterbox appeal in conjunction with St. Marys Church. We raised
enough for two Shelter boxes, which went to Italy to help those who lost everything in the earthquakes and we
also sent some education packs for children. As the Fun Quiz evenings were so well received we hope to have
some more in the church. Look out for posters for dates.
We have been to Eastbourne to sort out a seafront hotel and look forward to taking Buckden Friends away next
May.
We are planning some Autumn outings to IKEA and Knebworth. Look for notices in local shops.
Looking forward to supporting the fund raising for the church roof and know you all will help
Thank you Pat & Brian. 01480811020, patking@writeme.com
