BUCKDEN CHURCH OF
ENGLAND SCHOOL
(Primary Academy Trust)
March 2017
As Spring approaches, we are busy preparing for the better
weather. March has been a busy month with a variety of
activities. We celebrated World Book Day with the children
and teachers bringing their favourite book to school to share
with their friends. Our year 5 children had a Medieval Day.
The children (and teachers) came to school dressed in clothes
of the period. They learnt about life in the time of the Magna
Carta, around the early 1200’s, what life was like for a peasant
in 1215, how the feudal system worked, what was King John
really like and how the Magna Carta came about. They also
took part in a variety of activities including writing in authen-
tic ink and designing their own coat of arms.
The PTA hosted a Mothers Day Afternoon Tea for our Mums
and Grandmas. Our visitors enjoyed a cup of tea with their
scones or cake – in some cases both! The PTA also organised
a shop where the children were able to buy a present for their
mums. It was a lovely afternoon – we were pleased to see so
many of our mums join us.
Our Year 3/4 children have been very busy writing, learning,
practising and performing their end of term play. ‘Porridge’
was performed to our parents and friends who came along
and, we hope, enjoyed the production. Well done to all our
budding actors and actresses and to the staff who turned
their hand to writing, directing, producing, costume making
and prompters.
We have now over 500 bottles towards our greenhouse.
Thank you to everyone who has brought in their empty 2 litre
bottles. We have a target of 1500 bottles so we still have a
long way to go. Please continue to bring in your empty 2 litre
plastic bottles. We are grateful for all donations. The school
is also collecting the ‘Active Kids’ vouchers being given out
when you shop in Sainsburys. We are aiming for a record
collection this year which will enable us to buy sports equip-
ment for the school. If you do shop in Sainsburys, please col-
lect the vouchers and bring them into the school office. We
are grateful for all donations. Thank you.
We would like to wish the residents of Buckden a Happy East-
er. We look forward to seeing you when we return for the
Summer Term on Tuesday 18
th
April.
As I write this, the children have been enjoying St Patrick’s
Day craft activities. We have a lovely line of happy leprechaun
faces hanging on our display line and our pot of gold activity
has given the children the chance to think about how they
would use a great deal of money. Unfortunately, any hopes
we had of this bringing out their charitable side have so far
been disappointed! Answers have included, “I’d buy a big gold
ship,” and “I’d buy Santa!” Of course, we may have also been
making items for Mother’s Day, which Mums will have re-
ceived by now. We hope you liked them.
We’d like to thank everyone who donated to our Easter
Raffle. By the look of the hampers, the winners will spend the
rest of the year trying to burn off the calories! Although the
village festival and Buckfest still seem a long way away, we
will be asking for donations for our famous tombola, so if you
have any unwanted suitable items, they would be gratefully
received.
St. George’s Day is nearly here, and this will give us a chance
to discuss what it means to be ‘brave’. Our sponsored bounce
and Easter craft morning are also just around the corner and
promise to be fun, if hectic, events – and of course, both staff
and children are enjoying the warmer weather and the sun-
shine. Our secure, shaded outdoor area comes into its own at
this time of year, allowing the children to play outside in the
fresh air regularly without having to make a trip to a park or
field as some preschools do. We are aware how lucky we are
in this regard.
We look forward to seeing you at our summer events.

THANK
YOU!
A huge thank you to all who attended or supported our Chari-
ty Boden event. We raised an amazing £1400 for The Alex
Hulme Foundation. They were absolutely delighted.
Look forward to seeing you all again next year.
