Village News
Bookings
We have a wedding reception, a kid’s party and
meetings booked by Cambridgeshire County Council,
Northamptonshire County Council, Parkinson’s UK and
Diabetes UK amongst all our regular hirers this month.
Car Park
The Village Hall car park can get very busy at times,
but Saturday mornings are proving to be a continuous
problem for the people who have hired the Hall for
their events and also the villagers that live near to the
Hall. The Trust politely requests that any local people
please refrain from bringing cars to the car park on a
Saturday morning unless they are involved in the
event taking place inside the Hall.
Don’t forget that as residents of Buckden you all receive
discounted rates on Hall hire. Please call or email me if
you would like to find out more information
BUCKDEN WI
At our March meeting we welcomed
Trevor Gunton and his wife, Veronica,
who gave us a very informative talk
about the history of the Vikings. It ap-
pears that most came from Northern
Germany and, due to the rise in Christi-
anity, they migrated north to Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
They were a very efficient race and had an ability to build
amazing ships which were perfect for landing on beaches.
In 793 the first attack on Lindisfarne took place and they pro-
ceeded to dominate the northern seas for 200 years. They
travelled as far west as the Shetland and Orkney islands, Ice-
land and Newfoundland and as far east as Ukraine and Russia.
The Vikings caused havoc in the Mediterranean and terror in
coastal habitats. Monasteries and abbeys rich in silver and
gold and run by the wealthy Saxons at Lindisfarne, Whitby and
Jarrow did not expect to be attacked but were laid waste.
They were pirates who operated a “smash and grab” ap-
proach – take it and get home quickly! They came for slaves
who were then taken into Europe and traded to the Middle
East. Eventually, the Viking world changed to Christianity and
their chiefs even visited Jerusalem.
In Iceland the entire population was made up of Vikings. They
created their own towns and brought ponies from Norway for
transport, food and leather. During the summer months there
would have been an abundance of food but in the winter
many starved to death.
Even today much of our language comes from the Vikings –
our days of the week, much of our flora and fauna and place
names such as Lundy which was the Viking word for “puffin”.
We saw slides depicting the amazing scenery in Norway and
Iceland which, I’m sure, have whetted the appetites of many
members to visit “The Lands of the Vikings”.
At our next meeting on April 2nd, we’ll be welcoming Jackie
Daniels who will be talking to us about the history of the WI.
The competition will be for a photograph of a past WI occa-
sion and, as always, visitors will be most welcome.
