Buckden Roundabout
April 2019
School & Pre-school
There’s always so much going on at Preschool in the Spring
Term. There were some great costumes for World Book Day
and those who attended the Booky Breakfast really enjoyed
their bacon rolls! Thank you to everyone who came along
and raised money for Book Aid International, a great cause.
The sponsor money is starting to come in from our annual
Pancake Flip and the children did really well at flipping their
pancakes; thank you to all the sponsors and also to those
parents who came to our Parents’ Evening, which was a
great chance to share information on the children’s progress.
We are now in full swing with our Spring activities. The chil-
dren have been learning about growth and change, including
making blossom trees, learning about baby animals, making
stained glass style bumble bees and learning about patterns
by making patterned butterfly wings. Our sensory tray is all
about texture, containing flour, oats or shredded paper to
get the children talking about how these materials feel and
searching for the various things staff have hidden within!
This half term, we have welcomed two new staff members
Gemma Furley and Trudi Atkins, who are busy getting to
know the children and their families. We have also wel-
comed new starters and hope that they and their families
enjoy their time as part of our community.
Looking forward, there are also Easter activities to look for-
ward to. Details of our Easter Egg Hunt are still tbc, so look
out for updates on our website or FB page. From the start of
April, entry forms will be available for our Design an Easter
Egg competition. Entry is 50p and this year, ADULTS CAN
ENTER! Age categories are 0-4, 5-7, 8-17 and 18+, so put on
your creative heads and get designing!
Finally, we are still looking for more committee members.
There is only one meeting a term and it’s usually a fun event
with refreshments. It’s a great chance to do something for
the community, and to be more involved with Preschool if
you have a child or grandchild etc. who attends.
There are still some Preschool places available; to enrol your
child or arrange a visit, contact our Manager, Samantha Sin-
clair, on 07941 671999. For committee enquiries, please con-
tact our Chairperson, Becky Milne, at

BUCKDEN CHURCH OF
ENGLAND SCHOOL
(Primary Academy Trust)
March 2019
As spring approaches, we are looking forward to warm spring
like days, although February has already bought warm weather
and sunny days, even if only for a brief time.
We have been busy fundraising and having various activities for
different occasions this month.
It was World Book Day earlier in the month when we invited
parents and friends to come into school to read a favourite
story with their children – a very popular event.
For Comic Relief Day the children came to school with funny
hair styles decorated with ribbons and clips raising money for
this worthy charity. The children’s imaginations were very
amusing and great fun was had by all.
For Downs Syndrome Awareness Day we all came to school
wearing stripey and odd socks to raise money for the Downs
Association.
The PTA organised couple of events this half term including a
cinema night and a Mother’s Day shop and afternoon tea. The
children enjoyed watching the films – the choice of films this
time was Sherlock Gnomes or Christopher Robin, both excel-
lent films which the children enjoyed. The annual Mother’s
Day shop was once again very popular. The children were able
to buy a Mother’s Day present for their mothers and grand-
mothers. We hope you all liked your presents. The PTA also
hosted a Mothers Day Afternoon Tea for our Mums and Grand-
mas. Our visitors enjoyed a cup of tea with their scones or cake
– in some cases both! It was a lovely afternoon – we were
pleased to see so many of our mums and visitors join us.
Our Year 3/4 children have been very busy writing, learning,
practising and performing their end of term play. ‘The Quest
for Arthur’ was performed to parents and friends who came
along and, we hope, enjoyed the production. Well done to all
our budding actors and actresses and to the staff who turned
their hand to writing, directing, producing, costume and scen-
ery making and prompters.
Our football teams have been playing in many games and tour-
naments with other local schools. We will let you know how
they fared in the next edition of the Buckden Roundabout.
We would like to wish the residents of Buckden a Happy Easter.
We look forward to seeing you when we return for the Summer
Term on Tuesday 23
rd
April.
Did you know…?
The George was built, directly opposite the Lion, in the 18
th
century. Rumour says it was favoured by the notorious high-
wayman, Dick Turpin, who had an emergency exit in case of
trouble.

Did you know…?
George Cartwright, an 18
th
century landlord of the George,
was the driver of the York Express daily to and from Welwyn.
Influential sporting writer, Peter Pry, described him as “the
idol of the road”.
