Buckden Roundabout

January 2020

Church News

Weekly Prayer Roster

Each week during the year the Churches, in their prayers, remember the residents of particular streets in the village, those who

work in the parish and village organisations. Those to be remembered this month are:

5th January

Buckden Surgery: the doctors, nurses, receptionists, pharmacists, health visitors and midwives;

those we know who are in hospital, the elderly, disabled and housebound

12th January

Farming communities, Taylor’s Lane (West), Hardwick Lane, the residents and staff of Hardwick

Dene, Great North Road, Brampton Road, Perry Road, Buckden Wood

19th January

High Street, Ivelbury Close, York Yard, Lion Yard, George Lane, King George Court, Taylor’s Lane

(East), Wolsey Gardens, Charles Court

26th January

Hunts End, Copes Close, Monks Cottages, Hunts End Court

Thought for the Month

As a new person in this area I would like to introduce myself

as the new Minister at Perry Baptist Church. Much of my life

has been like the new boy as the son of a serving member of

the RAF and then joining the RAF as well. Life has always been

about adjustments and preparing for new experiences and

adventures. That’s not always easy, sometimes a bit like nego-

tiating the Buckden Roundabout when driving. Yet we never

succeed in completing the journey into Buckden by ignoring

that it is there. As a family we are enjoying life in this locality

and confident there are some great possibilities ahead of us.

Life in general has been described as a journey of life too. A

journey that will have the ups and downs that can never be

avoided. The bible quotes Jesus as saying “I am the way, the

truth and the life” (John chapter 14 verse 6). As we begin a

new year in our journey of life we all need to be sure of which

way to go and the best we can make of life. We will find many

questions that need to be answered with honesty, but if we

want the best answers Jesus has them all for us. Jesus provid-

ed the way for us by giving His life on the cross of Calvary in

order that we might have life in abundance. That seems like a

good deal to me. The deal is available for all of us as we trust

Jesus as our Saviour and Lord.

I wish you all a blessed New Year in 2020. May your spiritual

vision really be described as 20:20 because Jesus is the one

who leads you as the Good Shepherd.

Blessings to all of you, Jon Magee, Perry Baptist Church

BUCKDEN BRANCH - ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

After last year, the church for Remembrance Sunday 2019 was

not quite so full. There was still a great turnout and it was

good to have more Legion members parading despite one or

two dropping out for age or family absence. The turnout from

all the uniformed organisations in the village was, as ever, ex-

cellent. It was good to see participation from all the churches

in the village and Jes, as ever, preached a moving and thought

provoking sermon. My thanks also go to Rick Screaton who

took on the lesson which is read by a member of the Legion

and to Lucy Mayes from the Scouts who read the other lesson.

Thanks also to Steph Aldridge who stood up with me to give

the dedication following the reading of the Role of Honour.

Yet again, we have been helped out by 73 Squadron ATC at

Brampton who kindly released Corporal Ben Chapman from

other duties to act as our standard bearer. Ben did a great job

and I hope we may be able to secure his services again next

year. Last, but very far from least, this year Michelle Wootton

stood down as trumpeter in favour of Charlotte Norman from

the Scouts, who performed the very difficult Last Post and the

only slightly easier Reveille excel; I hope that she can be per-

suaded to repeat the performance next year.

Armistice Day fell on the Monday immediately after Remem-

brance Sunday and the usual ceremony was conducted at the

War Memorial. With members of Buckden School attending

and at Jes’s suggestion, I again read out the Roll of Honour

before the two minutes silence. It was good to see a signifi-

cant turnout again, this time with so many young people pre-

sent.

On to other Branch news. Our new Poppy Appeal co-

ordinators, Tim and Ce Walker had a magnificent start for their

first year organising the appeal in the village. The figure so far

is nearly £3,700 and not everything is yet in; we are hoping to

get much closer to £5,000 when everything is accounted. Oth-

erwise we continue to limp along, but it was good to have con-

tact with and help from some younger members during the

remembrance period.

Finally, I was pleased to see others besides myself and Alison

wearing our parent’s or other relation’s medals on Remem-

brance Sunday. With six more years of World War Two 80

th

anniversaries coming up, perhaps we could continue and ex-

tend the practice?
