BUCKDEN CHURCH OF
ENGLAND SCHOOL
(Primary Academy Trust)
February 2020
February is always one of our quieter months.
The children have been working hard, many of
them preparing for their tests in the summer term. Having
said that we have had some interesting events during the
month!
Our school Parliament arranged a Bring and Buy sale to raise
money for the charities who have been helping the animal vic-
tims of the devastating bush fires in Australia. The children
brought in unwanted books, toys and games and everything
was sold for 50p The total raised by the sale was £148.00,
which has been sent to the World Wildlife Fund to be passed
on to the Australian charities.
The children in Reception, Year 4 and Year 5, have been regular
visitors to Hardwick Dene over the past few months. The visits
have been enjoyed by both the children and the residents of
Hardwick Dene. The school has also had visits from some of
the residents who have been sitting in on the Year 4 French
lessons. Again, everyone has had fun learning the French lan-
guage together.
During this term whole school is taking turns to visit the library.
Each Tuesday one year at a time is making the short walk to
explore the library and choose a book. It is also an opportunity
for children to join the library if they were not members.
Thank you to the staff at the library for the help and hospitality.
The PTA held an end of term disco for the whole school. Two
discos were held – one for each of the key stages. A good time
was had by everyone.
Buckden Academy Aspirations Day 2020
Following our successful Aspirations Day of two years ago for
the children in Key Stage 2, we are having another one on Fri-
day 6
th
March 2020. During the day we hope to introduce the
children to a wide range of career opportunities, the aim being
to widen their horizons and inform them of the many different
career paths that might interest them.
We are looking for volunteers to come into the school and
share with the children what they do as a profession, maybe
bring along aspects of their work, such as tools, vehicles, uni-
forms etc and photos. We would like this to be a thoroughly
interactive day, with the children moving around the school
talking to our visitors.
If you are interested could you please email Mrs Heather, Dep-
uty Headteacher, at
mheather@buckdenacademy.org
, or tele-
phone the school office on 01480 810241 giving the following

What your profession is
Throughout February, the children have been busy using the
medical sets to look after each other and the dolls. This is a
great example of how children can learn through play, as this
kind of role-playing as doctors and patients helps them to
develop language skills. It encourages them to talk about
parts of the body, emotions and sensations (sad, crying, hurt,
feeling sick!) and positional and size language (e.g. “I’m
wrapping a bandage around his head,” “She has a cut on her
knee,” “That will need a big plaster!”). This roleplay will also
lead neatly on to our emergency services theme which we
will be starting next term, when we also hope to do some
planting with the children to help them learn about nature,
growth and change.
The children have been enjoying visits to the library for
Rhyme Time on a Tuesday too and spending time outside
(when there aren’t gale-force winds!).
In the last month, we have also welcomed another new staff
member, Laura, who is level 3 qualified, and more new chil-
dren to Preschool too. We hope they all enjoy their time with
us! Miss Nicola is presently Acting Manager and can be con-
tacted with any queries on the number below. Ofsted visited
Preschool recently and delivered a very positive report on its
progress under new management.

Are you available for the whole day or half day (am or
pm)

How much space you would need.
We believe this could be a really exciting day for our chil-
dren. The hope is that they will learn that by working hard it
will open up a wide range of opportunities and choices for
them in later life.
Thank you for your continued support or our school and
enriching the lives of our children.
