Bookings
We have the NHS Blood Donor session on Sunday 26
th
May.
We also have a kid’s party and a wedding reception
amongst all our regular weekday hirers.
Cyclists on paths around Valley
We have received complaints that adult cyclists are using
the paths around the Valley and showing no regard for the
pedestrians. If you are on a bicycle, please dismount if you
see pedestrians coming your way as the paths are very nar-
row.
New caretaker
After nearly nine years of working at the Hall our fabulous
caretaker, John McConnell, is moving on. We are sad to see
him go but are happy to welcome George Fullam who will
take over the role. George is a long-term resident of the
village. The Trust would like to thank John for all his hard
work over the years. He has been an absolute asset to the
Hall.
Don’t forget that as residents of Buckden you all receive
discounted rates on Hall hire. Please call or email me if
you would like to find out more information
BUCKDEN WI
At our April meeting the ladies enjoyed
a talk “History of the W.I.” by Jackie
Daniels. This was very apt as Buckden
W.I. celebrates its centenary this year.
Madge Watt was the Canadian woman
who brought the WI to the UK. She was a founder member of
the first WI in British Columbia. In 1913 after the death of her
husband Dr Alfred Watt, Madge brought her two sons to Eng-
land to complete their education. She was keen to start WIs in
Britain, but it was not until 1915, when she met John Nugent
Harris, secretary of the Agricultural Organisations Society
(AOS), that she had any success. The AOS then employed her,
initially for six months, to try to start WIs.
The first WI meeting in the UK was held in Llanfairpwll on An-
glesey, Wales, on 16 September 1915. The W.I. was first es-
tablished to educate rural women, and to encourage country-
women to get involved in growing and preserving food to help
to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation. Madge
formed well over 300 WIs including one at Sandringham fol-
lowing an invitation from Queen Mary. Even today our pre-
sent Queen attends the WI at Sandringham when she is stay-
ing there.
When the NFWI was formed in 1917, Lady Denman was elect-
ed the first National Chairman. Denman College was named
after Lady Denman and is the WI’s centre for learning, offering
a wealth of opportunities to learn new skills on day schools
and residential courses in the field of cookery, craft and life-
style.
The first Buckden WI President was Miss Lynton and the
motto was “The only way to have a friend is be one”. The
members felt this motto still applies today.
It was an inspiring talk Jackie gave us and it made us really
think what a big organisation we belong to and how our reso-
lutions have made an impact, such as looking after the envi-
ronment, health issues, fair trade, equality for both men and
women and social issues.
