Urgent plea

Do you enjoy reading the Buckden Roundabout and do you think it is an asset for Buckden? Would you like to

volunteer to keep it going? Buckden Roundabout urgently needs a new Commercial Manager to work with our

advertisers. You’ll join our friendly editorial team and work with new and existing advertisers, booking advertising

space and raising invoices. It takes just a few hours every month. Without a Commercial Manager we get no in-

come, and without income we cannot continue to produce the magazine. Please, please, if you think you can

help, contact us at

http://www.buckdenroundabout.info/contact-us

or call 01480 351547. If you know of someone

who might be willing to help, please mention this to them.

Badgers

Badgers will be the focus of an illustrated talk to be given to the Wildlife Trust, Huntingdonshire Local Group, on

Wednesday 12

th

October 2016 at 7.30pm at Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrapston Road, Brampton.

Our presentation will be given by Patrick Barkham, who is a natural history writer for The Guardian and former

feature writer for the Times. Patrick has authored several books, notably ‘Badgerlands’ and ‘The Butterfly Isles’.

His latest book is about National Trust coastal properties and was written to celebrate the 50

th

anniversary of the

National Trust’s campaign to save our coasts.

Tonight Patrick will focus on the secretive life of Badgers, covering areas such as habitat, social organization and

the conservation issues that affect one of our favourite mammals.

Anyone interested in wildlife is most welcome to attend. Booking is not necessary. Entrance charge £2.50

(accompanied children free). Please contact Tim on 01480 457795 for more information

In September, Barry Tomlinson returned to expand on his talk last year about Bedford

RAE. This time he told us of the construction and workings of the supersonic wind tun-

nels and the part they played in making Britain’s aerospace industry world beaters in the

1950-70s, the testing of Concorde and the Lightning among others. His group works to

preserve the remnants of the site, although they cannot access the top secret Red Bull

Formula 1 Racing Team’s wind tunnel, an upgraded original 1950s tunnel!

Nora Butler is the speaker at the October meeting, she will give an illustrated talk about Kimbolton castle through

the ages.

Kimbolton Castle has a rich and fascinating history that has seen it develop from a wooden motte and bailey cas-

tle in Norman times, into the building it is today - home to Kimbolton School. The family seat of the Dukes of Man-

chester from 1615 to 1950, it is famous as the final home of King Henry VIII's first wife, Queen Katharine of Ara-

gon.

It is with great regret that we say farewell to our Commercial Manager, Keith Lawrence.

Keith joined the editorial team at the same time as we all did - immediately following the sad passing of the previ-

ous editor, Tony Gilchrist. When we started this, none of us were particularly sure how we would manage to pro-

duce the magazine regularly, or what efforts would be required. We quickly established that there would be too

much work for one person (I still don’t how Tony managed it!), and so we divided the responsibilities into 4 areas

editing, adverts, distribution and the website.

Keith quickly volunteered to take on the advertising side of the magazine, an act I was, and still am, very grateful

for. Under Keith’s stewardship, the commercial side of the magazine has expanded and improved. We have in-

creased the number of pages devoted to advertising (and still regularly fill them) and we introduced colour adver-

tising on the back pages initially, soon adding the inside front cover when it became apparent how high the de-

mand for colour adverts would be, and still is!

We would like to express our profound thanks to Keith for all his effort, enthusiasm, ideas and diligence in chasing

copy and advertising fees! We are seeking a new Commercial Manager - please see below!
