Buckden Roundabout

December 2019

Village Notices

FRIENDS IN DEED

There are times in our lives when

we could all do with a little extra

support or companionship what-

ever our age or circumstance.

Following the Friends in Deed AGM in October we now have a

new Visits Co-ordinator, Angie Bruce, and a (partially) new

committee. Our great thanks go to Jane and Andy Scott for all

their work as co-ordinators for the past 4 years. We are all

looking forward to another year reaching out to and helping

people in Buckden. The help we can provide includes:-

Companionship – visiting you at home for a friendly

chat. This can be a regular arrangement or a one-off

visit.

Our Community Café runs every month (on the 2nd

Wednesday) and is open to all regardless of age, gen-

der, faith (or no faith), sexual orientation, colour, be-

liefs. Come along for help and support (if you need it)

or just a cuppa, cake and a chat.

Practical support - we can signpost to professional

agencies such as foodbank, debt agencies, citizens ad-

vice and have other information available to help point

you in the right direction.

Local Transport - when family, friends and public

transport are not available.

To contact us:

Just drop in to the Community Café which we run on the 2nd

Wednesday of each month in the Living Stones Room at St

Mary’s Church Buckden. You will be very welcome.

If you do need help or if you would like to join us in providing

help to others, please call our co-ordinator, Angie, on 07810

006598.

For transport requests, please call 07914 669967. Leave a

message and we will call you back. We are still seeking a new

transport co-ordinator. If you think you might be interested in

this role or want to know more, please call the transport num-

ber and we will call you back for a chat.

An Evening with Mike Dilger

The Huntingdonshire Local Group of the Wildlife Trust invites

you to come along for an entertaining evening with Mike

Dilger on Wednesday 11

th

December 2019 at 7.30pm.

Mike is a well-known face as a wildlife presenter, making reg-

ular appearances on the BBC’s One Show and Inside Out. He

is the author of numerous books, including Nightingales in

November, Natures Calendar and Natures Babies.

Mike has a passion for both British and tropical wildlife and

tonight he will share his tales of his extensive travels in the

tropics. Meetings are held at Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrap-

ston Road, Brampton, PE28 4TB, starting at 7.30pm.

We are expecting this to be a very popular talk and would ask

people to book in advance to ensure that they get a seat on

the night. Bookings should be confirmed either at one of our

autumn meetings or by contacting Alistair Grant on

alistairr-

grant@hotmail.com

or 07775365507.

Roundabout: early copy deadline in December

Note that the copy deadline in December for the January edition will be at

close of business on Friday 6th December 2019

Buckden Learning Group

The inaugural course run by the new Buckden Learning Group

(BLG) got off to a positive start with 44 enrolments. Liz Carter

is providing a series of enlightening lectures on ‘Victorian

Crime & Punishment’ that provoke stimulating discussions

during the refreshment breaks. The term concludes on 3rd

December with a lunch. Subject to demand, the course will be

followed up by a trip in the spring to Lincoln to visit the Victo-

rian prison (now a tourist attraction).

Starting on January 14th, Marina Burrell will regale us with

tales of ‘Famous Russian Women in World History & Culture’.

Various women (e.g. a princess, a diplomat, a ballerina, an

opera singer and a terrorist) will be considered; with lives full

of hardships and pleasures, excitement and

bewildering twists. How were they affected

by diverse historical and political contexts?

Find out what was extraordinary about these

women.

In April a Study Day will be run entitled ‘The

Light Ages’, telling the story of the transfer of

scientific knowledge from ancient Greece to Medieval Europe

via Islamic (Arabic) philosophers.

Look out for adverts (see page 13 of this issue) and village

posters for full details of these and other future events. Hav-

ing made a good start, the BLG Committee is now planning a

range of courses from September 2020 onwards.
