VILLAGE NEWS
In a recent interview Esther Ranzen said that for many people, the greatest poverty was loneliness. She has set
up a telephone link, “Silverline” for anyone who feels very much on their own.
It would sadden members of the Friends in Deed team if there were any people in Buckden in that situation. We
use our skills in various ways, but our first aim has always been to offer friendship and combat loneliness. You do
not have to be a “member” of Friends in Deed; your only qualifications have to be that you live within the parish
boundary of Buckden and that you have the courage to pick up the phone and speak to Christine our Co-ordinator
on
07810 006 598
.
We also have some social activities to look forward to. There is a regular “Drop in for a Cup of Tea” 2.30pm to
4.00pm in St. Mary's Living Stones Room on the first Wednesday of every month and a winter tea party is
planned for February 12
th
. 2014.
You can also ask for “one-off” help, if it is within our capabilities. The most requested help is for driving. Our trans-
port manager is Andy Scott

.
As it says on our logo, we really are “Here for the people of Buckden.”

We are delighted to report that the Christmas Lights raffle organized by B4B raised just over £1,700 and it has
been passed to the Village Hall Trust towards outdoor play facilities for older children and adults. The Trustees
have decided to put the money towards the fencing round the 5-a-side pitch on the playing fields to make the
whole area more attractive and prevent any balls being used from disappearing into the playing fields or tennis or
bowls clubs.
Our grateful thanks must go to the organisers (Ellen Barrett in particular as she was our main contact at B4B), Jo
Crouchman who co-ordinated the raffle, the prize givers, the ticket sellers and the ticket buyers. A great job by
everyone.
Please remember to join our 100 club – the next draw takes place at the end of March. Further details and appli-
cation forms from Rachel, our Village Hall Manager – call into the office or ring her on 01480-811101.
Our next fundraising event will be a Table Top Sale on Saturday, 8
th
February, in the morning. Look out for post-
ers. Further details from Rachel (contact details as before).
We finish by wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year – we shall look forward to seeing you all in the
Hall soon.
I hope everyone has recovered from our AGM. The fish & chips from The Lounge at the Marina were yummy and
went down well with the wine and mince pies. The singing of the Twelve days of Christmas was entertaining!!!
Happy New Year to every one. Our first meeting for 2014 will be on January 7
th
, 7.30pm in Buckden School Hall.
Visitors are welcome (£3). Members please bring your membership envelope with £34.70. We have an exciting
program for the year.
Our speaker for January will be telling us of her life on an Indian Reservation. The Competition is to bring a
‘Feathered Thing’ and the Market Stall is to bring something beginning with ‘B’.
Why not come and join us. You will be made most welcome.
