VILLAGE NEWS
Our Secretary and Poppy Appeal Organiser, Ve-
ronica Hunstone, organised another very suc-
cessful annual Poppy Appeal raising £4,384.67,
including £546.48 collected during the Remem-
brance Service and donations directly to the
branch; a little short of last year, but still an out-
standing result. As ever, my thanks go to Veron-
ica and to all the collectors who go out on the
streets and actually get the money in and the
shops and other establishments that display our
boxes; a big thank you to them all.
On Remembrance Sunday St. Mary’s Parish
Church was, as usual, full to standing room only.
Roger Cresswell took the service this year and
the Reverend Pam Sydall who assists at Buckden
Methodist Church gave a most interesting sermon
based partly on her own family memories and re-
cords. It was good to see the other churches in
Buckden represented at the service, reminding us
all of the work of Buckden & District Churches
Together currently chaired by Ally Barrett. I am
always grateful to St. Mary’s and particularly the
clergy and church wardens for their help and sup-
port in setting the whole service up. Thanks also
to Buckden Methodist Church for providing re-
freshments after the service; another annual
event that many enjoy.
As always, the Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Cubs
and Rainbows turned out in force to play their
part; smart and well presented as ever and this
year nothing to choose between them. Particular
thanks go to those who read the second lesson
and stood up with me to give the dedication at the
end of the reading of the Roll of Honour; I was
very impressed with the care and clarity which
they all brought to these parts of the service.
Richard Noble again read the lesson traditionally
assigned to the Legion and Dave Moorhouse,
brought his usual presence to the role of standard
bearer. Our President, Gwyn Thomas laid the
Branch wreath and it was good to have a repre-
sentative from HMP Lttlehay to lay their wreath
alongside him. This year we again used a re-
cording for the Last Post and Reveille, which was
ably managed by Chris; hopefully it was better
positioned than last year.
Armistice Day was on the Monday immediately
following Remembrance Sunday; it wasn’t a nice
day. Nevertheless a surprising number of stal-
warts turned up to the War Memorial by 1045 and
Roger (press-ganged twice in two days) and I led
a short ceremony of remembrance
Peter Mount.
