FRIENDS IN DEED

The AGM was held on 12 October and was a well attended and lively event. Our guest speaker

was Pauline Meakins from the Alzheimer's Society. She gave a very interesting talk about the

role of the Society and the support it can provide, and the various forms the illness can take.

Don’t forget that if you would like a visitor to chat to, you need help or advice, or transport, then

don’t hesitate to get in touch (details below) and we will try and help.

The Quiet Christmas Service is a peaceful, reflective event which is supported by Friends in Deed and will be held

on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s Church at 8pm.

The Drop-in Café is held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Living Stones Room in St Mary’s

Church from 1430 to 1600. Homemade cakes, tea and coffee - all welcome! Transport can be arranged (see be-

low) and we look forward to seeing you there.

The Winter Tea Party will be held on Wednesday 8th February at 2.30pm so there will be no Drop-in Café that

day.

We wish all our Friends a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

BUCKDEN WI

November was a busy month for Buckden WI. Our meeting on the 1

st

was about Operation Christ-

mas Child, the annual drive to collect shoeboxes full of gifts for needy children around the world

who would otherwise receive no presents. Carol Swepstone demonstrated how to prepare a box

and fill it with suitable items, before Brenda Horden showed pictures and spoke movingly about

her previous visit to Belaruse to help distribute boxes. Members were encouraged in their support of this very

worthwhile cause.

Our annual meal took place a week later at Buckden Towers where we enjoyed a delicious 3 course dinner and

plenty of good conversation. The meeting on December 6

th

will be our AGM helped on its way by pre-ordered fish

and chips! The market stall in support of the Denman College Appeal will be for anything to do with Christmas and

the competition will be ‘a winter scene’.

VILLAGE NEWS

Scout Christmas Post – What is it?

It is a tradition for the 1

st

Southoe and Buckden Scouts to collect and deliver Christmas cards within the village in

return for a donation for the service. Christmas Cards together with donations can be posted at clearly marked

boxes in Days, One Stop and Buckden Village Store. On the last Friday of the school term the cards are sorted

and delivered by the Scouts on the following Saturday.

The 1

st

Southoe and Buckden Scouts are an energetic group catering for boys and girls from Beavers (6 years)

through Cubs, Scouts and Explorers (18 years). The young adults then have the opportunity to become Young

Leaders and help out at the various sections.

The Scouting group follows a varied programme all aimed at developing life skills and are an active part of the

local community. Money raised from the Scout Christmas Post and other fundraising activities goes towards

providing equipment and facilities for the Scout Group. We are always looking for adults to get involved, if you

are interested and can spare some time please contact Aidan Joy on 01480 810347.
