FRIENDS IN DEED

Date for the diary! The Winter Tea Party will be held on Wednesday 8

th

February.

An informative Welcome Pack has been put together by Friends in Deed and the Parish Council

for those new to the village, including a village street map highlighting amenities, details of

transport facilities available in the village, and a footpath map of the local area. There is a refer-

ence copy to view in the Village Library and a pack may be obtained from John Chase, Clerk to

the Parish Council, from his office in the Village Hall. So if you are new to the village, or know someone who is,

then do let them know that the pack is available - or even get one for them!

With the nights drawing in and the weather getting colder, if anyone needs support with shopping or errands dur-

ing bad weather, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Also if anyone is housebound during the coming months and would

like a visit from one of our volunteers then give us a call on the Coordinator’s number below. And if anyone would

like to join us and be a volunteer visitor then please call the Coordinator.

We have a new Friend who is a retired advocate for Age UK. She is qualified to give advice similar to a social

worker and obviously confidentiality is paramount. Please contact the Coordinator if you think you need assis-

tance.

The Drop-in Café is held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Living Stones Room in St Mary’s Church

1430 to 1600. Homemade cakes, tea and coffee - all welcome! Transport can be arranged (see below) and we

look forward to seeing you there.

For help or information contact:

Coordinator: Jane Scott 07810 006598 Requests for transport: Andy Scott 07914 669967.

BUCKDEN WI

At the October meeting members were entertained with a talk “On the Edge - Family Life and

Paintings” by Ted Coney. It was very extraordinary how Ted captured Family Life and incorpo-

rated it into abstract paintings. In his talk Ted showed us pictures using technology and his Morris

Minor featured in some of his paintings and in his words “it was part of the family”. Ted’s talk was

informative and his life was very clearly reflected in his paintings.

At our next meeting, Tuesday 1st November there will be a talk by Brenda Horden about Operation Christmas

Child. Why not come along and find out more about the shoebox appeal it will be an interesting evening, as Buck-

den participates in this appeal. Everyone is welcome. The competition is a knitted item for a child.

Buckden Local History Society

Nora Butler, for many years teacher of History at Kimbolton School, gave a fascinating

overview of the life of the 'castle up the road' from its earliest days as a motte and bailey

in the 1200s to it's present occupancy by the school.

The Montague family, later the Dukes of Manchester, developed the building into the

imposing Vanbrugh building of today through several previous buildings some of which

have left traces of themselves behind, the courtyard being the most visible. Next month on 2nd November we will

travel along the Cambridge to Bedford railway in the company of George Howe. We meet in the Conference

Room at Buckden Towers at 7.30pm and visitors are always most welcome.
