Village Notices

FRIENDS IN DEED

Once again, we are indebted to all those who so generously

donated bottles to the Friends in Deed Bottle Stall at the Vil-

lage Fete. In spite of the inclement weather we raised the

grand sum of £226, more than we have

done in each of the previous 2 years! It

will go to the Village Hall Trust. And, of

course, very many thanks to all of you

who bought tickets! In particular, our

thanks go out to Friends in Deed mem-

bers Angie and Pam, who organised it our

stall, and also to Therisa and Bridget who provided much ap-

preciated assistance on the day.

The

next Community Café

will be on

Wednesday 14

th

August

in the Living Stones Room at St Mary’s, 2.30 to 4pm,

and we

look forward to welcoming you there. If you require transport

then just call us on the Transport Coordinator’s phone listed

below, but do give us a couple of days’ notice.

Our Friends in Deed dedicated drivers, all registered with

Cambridge County Council, are available to give lifts to hospi-

tal, medical, opticians and dental appointments, and for some

social events, when family or friends are not available and

public transport is unsuitable for the individual. There is a

small charge. Buckden Surgery has its own transport scheme

so we do not give lifts to the village surgery. Contact details

for transport are below.

For help or information contact:

Coordinator: Jane Scott 07810 006598

Requests for transport: Andy Scott 07914 669967.

Please leave a message and include your contact details.

Buckden Neighbourhood Watch

Criminals posing as council staff are targeting people across

the country in a new wave of council tax scams, offering bo-

gus refunds or threatening fines. Fraudsters are telling people

via text, email and telephone that either they have paid too

much council tax and are due a refund, which they offer to

claim on your behalf for a fee, or that you are in arrears and

demand immediate payment.

Another scam aims to convince people their property is in the

wrong council tax band and offers to secure a refund, again in

return for a payment. Council tax band reassessments are

available for free, but fees of £150 have been quoted in the

scams that falsely claim to be from local councils or the Valua-

tion Office Agency.

Some also use the Government’s GOV/UK branding in text

messages and often include a link to a fake website to claim

the refund.

I urge if you receive an email, text message or phone call

offering a Council tax refund not to give out any personal in-

formation particularly bank account details or debit or credit

card details. Councils will never phone, text or email residents

to ask for a payment to release a council tax refund or ask for

personal bank details.

These council tax scams can damage people’s lives, both fi-

nancially and emotionally. Anyone can be fooled by them es-

pecially if they appear to look official.

The Huntingdonshire Local Group of the Wildlife Trust invites

you to their first indoor meeting of the autumn on

Wednesday 11

th

September 2019 at 7.30pm

.

This illustrated talk about Goshawks will be given by Conor

Jameson, who has worked for the RSPB and BirdLife over 25

years. Conor has written for The Guardian and BBC Wildlife

and is a columnist for the RSPB magazine ‘Natures Home’.

The talk will tell the story behind Conor’s well known book

‘Looking for the Goshawk’, which took him to some unex-

pected places at home and abroad in search of this mystery-

shrouded bird of prey. Originally found in the UK, the gos-

hawk was persecuted to extinction in the late 19

th

century but

re-introduced in the late 1960s. Conor will expand upon the

turbulent history of the Goshawk, including how it lives,

where it lives and why it might be missing from our lives.

Anyone who is interested is most welcome to attend.

Meetings are held at Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrapston

Road, Brampton, PE28 4TB starting at 7.30pm. Booking not

necessary.
