Traffic lights on the roundabout?
The Church Commissioners who are the owners of the Silver
Street development site have proposed putting traffic lights on
the roundabout.
This is their solution to enable the development of 340 houses
to go ahead. They currently predict a queue of 300+ cars, over
a mile, in the High Street in the morning rush hour once the
developments are complete. The development is currently on
hold pending a solution to this issue.
This specific proposal is problematic. The roundabout is too
small for right turning traffic to queue at a red light without
blocking the A1. This is shown on the diagram. A similar pro-
posal at the Sandy roundabout made the situation worse and
had to be removed.
The Parish Council is very aware that
the roundabout is a major cause for
concern for everyone in the village.
With no strategic bypass in sight, we
need an alternative solution. We are
continuing to talk to Highways Eng-
land to try to identify a solution that
will work. However we feel very
strongly that any solution must be
implemented for a trial period of, say
6 months, during which time the de-
velopment must be on hold. The
worst of all worlds is a traffic solution
that doesn’t work for Buckden, the
houses are built, the developers walk
away, and we are left with an unac-
ceptable level of queueing.
We would really welcome your views
on this. Buckden Parish Clerk
