BUCKDEN WI

In June we welcomed Nick Grounds

from Wisbech to our WI meeting. A hor-

ticultural auctioneer by day, he kept us

all amused with stories of his life whilst

at the same time creating two beautiful

flower arrangements.

He gave us tips on how auctions work and what to look out

for and some of the tricks of the trade, for example: putting a

shiny spoon in a box of of relatively worthless glassware. A

prospective buyer will see it and bury it under the glasses

hoping no-one else will spot it. When they eventually bid for

the box they will think they've got a bargain when, in fact, all

they have got is a box of cheap glasses!

Another story he shared with us was when a very rare piece of

Royal Doulton, a figurine of Anne Boleyn, was up for auction.

As the clerk removed it from the cabinet he caught it on the

edge of the case and the head fell off. With great aplomb, the

auctioneer said :

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have here a very rare figure of

Queen Anne Boleyn after her execution"!

With flower arranging Nick maintained that we should con-

centrate on the flower rather than the arrangement and we

need a different way of looking at arrangements. Start with

the vase and not the foam – the structure of the vase will give

you the structure of the arrangement. Many arrangers are

moving away from using foam and have reverted back to

chicken wire and pin holders. After a truly entertaining even-

ing he left us with the words " Enjoyment is the journey, not

the destination!"

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 2nd July at 7.30 in the Millard

Suite. This will be our party evening and we will be enter-

tained by the "Merrymakers".
