This is theweekwhen local people knock on your door and ask you to help theRedCross continue itswork locally
and internationally responding toCrisis.
Locally theRedCross helps people leaving hospital, peopleneeding an urgent wheelchair or walking frame, peo-
plewho needhelp to get to hospital or inanambulance to get toa grandchild’swedding. To theRedCross every
crisis is personal, however largeor small. Thereare volunteers in your community always available to help others
with first aid or to teach child care, or to respond late at night with essentials for peoplewhose home is on fire.
Inmajor emergencies theRedCross is therewith boats in floods, distributing foodand cleanwater, manning res-
cue centres for foreigners importedas slaves, or Britishpeople stranded abroad, separated from familyor waiting
for news of an air crash. In thewar zones of Syria, in thedevastation of thePhillipines and Indiaafter theCy-
clones, ormanning refugee camps in Jordanand Lebanon, and on the borders of Afghanistan, RedCross volun-
teers are there tohelp.
EveryCrisis is personal and theRedCross needs your help to helpanyonewho asks for our help, Locallyor Inter-

Whodo I call if there isapower cut?
UKPower Networks owns andmaintains electricity cables and lines
across London, theSouthEast andEast of England, making sure your
lights stayon.
Wework hard to prevent power cuts.Wehave an extensive tree-
trimmingprogramme toprevent trees from damaging cables. Our flood
defencemeasures areeffective at protecting against water damage.We provide plans of where our electricity ca-
bles are andwe trainother companies’ staff toensure other people do not damage our cables. Overall, each year
we spend about £600million tomaintain and replacepower lines ensuring that the electricity network remains
reliable.
Unfortunately, despiteour efforts, accidents happen. If you experience a loss of power supply, you can contact us
in the followingways:
Vulnerable customers
Duringa power cut we understand that some peoplemayneedex-
tra support andoffer priority assistance for our vulnerable custom-
ers.
If we knowwhere you are, we can help.We holda list – calledPrior-
ityServicesRegister –of thousands of customerswhowould feel
particularly vulnerable during apower cut andwe provide themwith
extra support if needed.
Who can apply?
Customerswhoaredependent onmedical equipment; customerswhoare chronically sick or havea disability;
customerswho are blind, visually impairedor deaf; customerswith young babies; nursing or residential homes
and elderly customers. Wewill consider other cases too if you think youwould feel particularly vulnerable during
apower cut.
