runs the scheme throughout the county and we are delight-

ed to announce that Buckden Village Hall has achieved Hall-

mark 1 accreditation. We are all now working towards

achieving Hallmark 2!

Daddo’s Pizza

Daddo’s wood fired & mobile pizza stand is open for busi-

and we’re all happy to not have to cook on a Wednesday

BUCKDEN WI

At our January meeting the ladies en-

joyed cheese and wine as they grouped

around the tables to discuss and vote

on the resolutions, which might form

our national W.I. campaigns for the

coming year. There was much talk as these were discussed

and shared with the whole group. The voting slips were com-

pleted ready to hand in to Headquarters. Cheese and wine

made it a pleasant ambiance to discuss some serious issues.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday 5

th

February 7:30pm in the

Millard Suite at the village hall. Our speaker will be Emma and

Eric (our member Emma with Eric the Labrador – training

dogs for the hard of hearing). The competition is - A favourite

piece of music to listen to.

We warmly welcome visitors and new members to our

meetings

Office hours 9am to 2pm.

Are you considering starting some gentle exercise?

In the Spring, Buckden Surgery are planning to hold weekly

short chatter walks on Thursdays at 10am.

The walks will be free, not too fast, last around 20-30 minutes

and led by trained and dedicated volunteer walk leaders.

Ideal for people of any age who would like to get fitter, and a

great way to make new friends!

Part of the Huntingdonshire Health Walks scheme, and the

national initiative, “Walking For Health”, anyone is welcome

to come along and join the walks.

You don’t need to sign up to come every week - although reg-

ular walks will really help build up your stamina, energy and

fitness levels.

If you are looking for a longer walk, regular health walks (60

mins) in Huntingdonshire & Buckden take place on Wednes-

day afternoons at 2pm & Friday mornings at 10am.

If you are interested and would like to know more details,

please contact One Leisure on 01480 388111 or email active-

lifestyles@huntingdonshire.gov.uk

Please keep an eye open for posters and the next surgery

newsletter for the starting date of the short walks.

Buckden Bites

Did you know…?

...The oldest relic of human activity found in Buckden is a flint

axe from the early Stone Age period. Roman pottery remains

have also been found and there is evidence of a small Roman

settlement from the second century AD.

...The name “Buckden” comes from “Bugce” and “dene”.

“Bucge” is the name of a person and is a feminine name.

“Dene” means valley. “Buckden” therefore came from

“Bucge’s valley”.

…Buckden was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1066

and seems to be a quite ordinary medieval village. The lord of

the manor had 37 ‘serfs’, of whom 20 held plots of land for

farming. There was a church, a mill and a large meadow. It

was valued at £16 10s.

...Buckden church dates from around 1200. The tower and

nave are 15

th

century.

...A ceiling boss in the Lion Hotel, Buckden, is dated 1500.
