Buckden Roundabout
February 2019
School & Pre-school
The spring term is now in full swing and the children have
been enjoying colour mixing and running their own toy shop
and train ticket office. Next, they will be learning all about
animals that live in cold places. As part of this wintry theme,
they will be making pipe cleaner and bead snowflakes and
using ‘big feet’ to walk on numbered icebergs to improve
their number recognition and counting. They will also be
looking at animal lifecycles and counting marshmallows in
hot chocolate, which is a great way to spend a chilly month!
They have also been keeping warm with regular music and
movement sessions with Pauline Coker on a Monday. Pauline
comes in to do these sessions for free and we are very grate-
ful for her time and effort.
On the fundraising side, the Preschool will be holding a raffle
at the Melodramatics panto, which is on at the village hall
from 8
th
-10
th
February. The committee would be very grate-
ful for any donations of new items for the raffle, and it would
be a very worthwhile way of disposing of any unwanted
Christmas gifts you have! Donations can be dropped into
Preschool.
At the end of this half-term, we will be saying goodbye to
Miss Denise and Miss Sam (Hardy), who have both worked at
Preschool for many years. We will greatly miss them and the
valuable contribution they have made to Preschool, and wish
them all the best for the future.

Buckden Bites
Did you know…?
...Buckden has been on a major artery from early times. The
Great North Road (now A1) was maintained as an important
highway throughout the middle ages and was improved by
Edward I (1272–1307) who needed it for moving his armies.
...Buckden butcher, William Mariot was convicted of theft
after he stole a mare from its owner at Sibthorpe. To evade
capture he fled to Offord church hoping to claim sanctuary
but did not succeed and was forced to admit his theft, worth
10 shillings, before the coroner. He was pardoned after two
years on 23
rd
May 1408.
