BUCKDEN WI
Our July meeting was party night. The committee provided scones, jam, cream and strawberries and
also served the tea. Some members provided their own drink to make it more of a social evening. We
all enjoyed eating and socialising with each other. It was a relaxing evening before our Summer break.
We were entertained by a local choir “One over the Eight” who provided an informal concert for us.
This was much enjoyed by all and we are looking forward to their next visit.
At the next Meeting, Tuesday 4
th
September 7:30pm in the Millard Suite at the Village Hall our talk will be about ACCW (WI sup-
ported charity). Everyone is welcome. The competition is a foreign holiday memento.

Bookings
September is set to be a busy month after the relative calm of August. So far we have several business meetings including
BeNCH, Parkinson’s UK, Cambs County Council and Waitrose, a Blood Donor Session (7
th
), a wedding reception, a Table Top
sale (22
nd
), three kid’s parties and a private evening function as well as all our usual hirers.
Booking the Hall for functions
Booking the Hall for a family celebration couldn’t be easier and residents
of Buckden are given discounted rates. Simply call me, email me or just
pop in to discuss your ideas. The Hall looks so lovely when it’s decorated
for an event. The picture was taken when it was set up ready for a joint
kid’s party and christening. The black and white doesn’t quite do it justice
but gives you an idea of how the Hall is transformed with the marquee up,
a few tablecloths and some pretty decorations!
We are very lucky to have this facility on our doorstep!

Young scientists at Buckden Primary School
Good luck young scientists at Buckden C.E. Primary School
who will be taking part in The Energy Challenge from Sep-
tember! The Energy Challenge is a science-focused competi-
tion organised by AstraZeneca and MedImmune for pupils in
Year 5 and Year 6 in Cambridgeshire. If your school hasn’t
signed up to The Energy Challenge there is still time! The
Energy Challenge will be running throughout the next aca-
demic year with a grand final scheduled to take place in June
2019. The challenge is aligned with the National Curriculum
and is designed to help children recognise the impact of diet
and exercise on their bodies. The participants will have fun
whilst working scientifically; recording measurements, ob-
serving data and drawing conclusions. Furthermore, the chal-
lenge is completely free and participating schools will be as-
signed STEM mentors from AstraZeneca and MedImmune to
support their pupils as well as receiving a scientific mechani-
cal balance, to keep, for use both as part of The Energy Chal-
lenge and in their own STEM teaching into the future.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Sir,
The UK has finite space. Population growth has to stop at some
point. Quality of life, traffic congestion, school, doctor provi-
sion and wildlife are being degraded by population pressure.
Population projections for the UK in the future show 72 million
plus, putting us back to where we are now in terms of housing
shortage.
The Huntingdonshire 2036 Plan is “to influence...” not “stop”
development. There must be more accountability allowing resi-
dents to stop building. Solar panels, ground/air sourced heat
pumps must be integral to new builds. Present policies fail sus-
tainability.
All this needs to be taken up by all bodies at all levels now.
Yours sincerely
John Davies
